The 7th grade class of Green Mountain Middle School is holding a “Every Penny Counts” fundraiser to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic Hurricane on record that tore through the East Coast in late October. The “superstorm” killed more than 100 people, destroyed hundreds of homes and left millions without power.

The 7th graders hope to raise $1,500 by Nov. 30. Students will be placing collection tins in businesses throughout Chester, Ludlow and Cavendish as well as sending area businesses a letter
seeking a donation.

Many 7th grade students were affected by Tropical Store Irene, which flooded Vermont in August 2011, also destroying homes and roadways and cutting the power to many homes. Forty people died throughout the eastern United States. From their experiences, the 7th graders say they have decided to assist those who are now facing similar tragedies.

How to donate

To make a donation drop by any of the following shops or make a check out to GMUHS, and send it to: GMUHS, Attn: Ashley Carafiello, 716 VT Route 103 S, Chester, VT 05143.

Carafiello said the children are still deciding which charity will receive the donation.

You may be able to find collection tins at Salon 2000, Erskine’s Grain & Feed, Lisai’s Chester Market,
all in the Depot Street area; the Sunoco on Main Street, and Jiffy Mart and Chester Hardware, across from each other on Main Street; the Moon Dog cafe and Newsbank, west of the Green and Chester-Andover Elementary School, all in Chester. The Pizza Stone and Main Street Pizza, both in Chester, also will be participating. Others participating include Goodman’s and Okemo Mountain Resort of Ludlow, Singleton’s and Cavendish Elementary School, both in Cavendish.
