Aug. 15: ‘This Blessed Plot’ premieres at Weston Rod & Gun Club

This Blessed Plot, the latest work by Obie-winning actor/writer Marc Wolf and starring Wolf, will run Aug. 15 through Sept. 1 at the Weston Rod & Gun Club, 982 Route 100, Weston.

Co-written by Wolf and Robert Westfield, This Blessed Plot explores the relationship of two of the most influential New Yorkers of the mid-20th century, Joseph Papp and Robert Moses. Wolf plays master builder Robert Moses, Public Theater founder Joe Papp, the Bible’s Moses and a host of other characters in a smart and funny one-man show about the battle for free Shakespeare in New York’s Central Park.

Performances are on Tuesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.; with matinees Saturdays at 2 p.m.; Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the Playhouse Box Office, by phone at 802- 824-5288, or online at http://www.westonplayhouse.org/

Aug. 17: Black Sheep Radio hold block party

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, Black Sheep Radio celebrates its eighth year on the air with a community block party at the Waypoint Center at 17 Depot St. in Bellows Falls.

The block party is the big summer fundraiser for the volunteer-run radio station and it will feature some of the region’s best original talent. Musical acts scheduled include: nu-grass pioneers and valley celebrities Jatoba; Brattleboro Blues legend Sunny Lowdown; new-romantic guitar newcomers, Moxley Union; Saxtons River’s avant-rock I Love You; and the folk-rock debut of Belmond, Brady and Stacey.

Bellows Falls’ Popolo will cater the food and beverages with contributions from Lisai’s Market, Smokin’ Bowls and the Village Market in Saxtons River. Music will stream live with connectivity provided by Sovernet.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets are available at www.wool.fm, at popolomeanspeople.com and in person at Popolo, 36 The Square in Bellows Falls. All party proceed will benefit operations at the non-profit, volunteer-run community radio station, WOOL and Great Falls Community Broadcasting Co.

Aug. 17: Silent movie night returns to Ludlow auditorium

Friends of the Ludlow Auditorium will host its annual Silent Film Night at 7 p.m. Saturday Aug. 17 with Steamboat Bill Jr., the 1928 classic comedy starring Buster Keaton at Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium, 137 Depot St. in Ludlow.

The screening will be presented as the original silent films were, on the big screen, with live music. The show, like all movies at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium, is free and open to the public.

Steamboat Bill Jr. will be preceded by a Buster Keaton comedy short. For this opening short, Ludlow resident Glenn Brown will provide the musical background using the 1906 upright grand piano that he donated to the town hall auditorium.

Steamboat Bill Jr. will have live accompaniment provided by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based composer who specializes in creating music for silent film presentations. Rapsis will create a score as the movie unfolds to enhance the action on the screen as well respond to audience reactions.

The Chester Senior Citizens Club is holding a bag lunch picnic at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at the Pinnacle Recreation Area on Lovers Lane in Chester. Bring a chair and your bag lunch and enjoy the fellowship. If you need a ride, call Georgia at 875-6242.

Aug. 24: United Church of Ludlow plans flea market

The United Church of Ludlow women’s annual flea market and luncheon will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, in the garage area behind the church at 48 Pleasant St. in Ludlow, at the corner of Elm and Pleasant streets.

The flea market will feature an assortment of items. The luncheon, served in the church’s community room from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will feature a cold plate special consisting of chicken, ham and egg salads, potato salad, cole slaw, rolls, cookies and beverages for $5.

Sept. 19: Golfing for Springfield Hospital

Springfield Hospital’s 13th annual Challenge Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Okemo Valley Golf Club, 77 Okemo Ridge Road, in Ludlow. A four-player scramble, the tournament has a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Players may enter as a team or as individuals. The entry fee for this fundraiser is $150 per person.

A and B flights ensure golfers compete at their level and increase the number of winning teams. Trophies and gift certificates to Okemo’s pro shop will be awarded to more than 1 out of every 4 golfers in the tournament.

Golfers will receive a golf umbrella (hospital blue with both the golf challenge and centennial logos in silver) at registration, a box lunch, complimentary refreshments on the course and a post-event buffet.

There will be raffles, a putting contest with cash prizes, hole-in-one prizes on all par 3 holes, including $100,000 cash, in celebration of the hospital’s centennial, and a new vehicle.
