Jan. 12: An afternoon of ‘True Tales’

Experience the magic of live storytelling in Proctorsville on 4 p.m. Sunday Jan. 12 at Gethsemane Church on Depot Street. Admission is $10. True Tales is a fundraiser for the Cavendish Community Fund, which provides grants to support special local projects in history, education and the arts.

Eight locals with a flair for the spoken word will provide a winter’s afternoon of stories performed live without script — true tales that will touch your heart, make you laugh out loud and give you food for thought. For more information, call 802-226-7497.

Feb. 1: PoemTown Randolph seeks submissions from Vermont poets

Randolph Area Community Development Corp., organizers of PoemTown Randolph 2014, offers a celebration of poetry throughout the month of April, National Poetry Month. The event includes poetry displays and reading events, it will conclude with a celebration on May 1.

Now through Feb. 1, the RACDC is soliciting poetry submissions from poets from all over Vermont.

Poetry submission is open to Vermont residents of all ages. Entrants may submit up to three neatly handwritten or typed/printed poems that are no longer than 24 lines. Entries must be postmarked by Feb. 1, 2014. Poems submitted after that date will not be considered. The poet’s name, city/town of residence, email address, and phone number should appear only on the back of the entry. Previously submitted work that displayed at Poetry Alive! or PoemCity displays in Montpelier or that has appeared in print will not be accepted.

By sending a work to PoemTown 2014, writers agree that organizers may use it in display, promotional materials and associated online, print and other media.

In conjunction with PoemTown displays, there will be scheduled poetry readings that include:

• April 3 – poetry reading by Vermont poet laureate Sydney Lea.

• April 15 – a shared reading by Vermont poets Samn Stockwell and Pamela Harrison.

• April 10 – an open mic reading open to any Vermont poet.

• April 21 – a PoJazz event. A jazz quartet will play while poets Geof Hewitt and Tony Whedon and writers Angela Palm and Jessica Hendry Nelson read their works.

PoemTown Randolph culminates with Powerful Poems and Decadent Desserts, a celebration May 1 at Chandler Center for the Arts, 71-73 Main St., Randolph. Further details will be announced later. For information on Randolph Area Community Development Corp. or questions on the event call 802-728-4305.
