Sept. 9: Learn about planetary nebulae

On Tuesday Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., the Southern Vermont Astronomy Group will be hosting a presentation on planetary nebulae by Francis P. Wilkin, Ph.D.

Planetary nebulae are glowing, hot bubbles of gas created in the final stages of the lives of ordinary stars.

Wilkin will explain how planetary nebulae relate to the late stages of stellar evolution. Attendees will see photography of many planetary nebulae taken by recent space-based observatories.

The public is invited to this free presentation, which will be held in the Lodge at Magic Mountain, 495 Magic Mountain Access, Londonderry. For further information contact Robert Dudley at greyowlvermont@live.com.

Sept. 11: Free wellness classes for children

Springfield Medical Care Systems is offering “Healthy Kids — Healthy Families,” free wellness classes for children.

The five-week program is a group meeting designed to teach children and their families how to maintain a healthy weight. Attendees will learn about healthy food choices and healthy portions, how to improve on physical activity habits and work together as a family to improve health through behavior change to achieve a healthy weight.

The program meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 and 18, and Oct. 2, 9 and 16. The program is designed for children ages 8 to 12 years old with a parent or caregiver.

Sept. 12 : Two nights of Sittin’ Around the Piano at Jamaica Town Hall

With permission from the Actor’s Theatre Playhouse of West Chesterfield, N.H., Southern Vermont Lyric Theatre will present two performances of  Sittin’ Around the Piano.

Singers Ray Mahoney, Joanne Meade, Cindy Choate, Jason Guerino, Nancy Groff, Julie Olsson and Marilyn Tullgren will perform an evening of songs from Les Misérables, A Little Night Music, Ragtime, Chicago, Cabaret, Oklahoma, 1776, Pippin and Porgy and Bess  at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13 at the Jamaica Town Hall 17 Pikes Falls Road, in Jamaica.

Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 general admission. The Jamaica Town Hall is handicap-accessible. For further information, call 802-874-4220.

Sept. 13: Seven live-talks at TEDxBattenkill

On Saturday, Sept. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Maple Street School in Manchester Center, experience TEDxBattenkill, an independently organized TED event featuring action-inspiring live talks by thought leaders and innovators, a locavore lunch and networking reception where attendees will meet the speakers.

Speakers include: Fulbright scholar and UVM Professor Dana E. Walrath; writer and explorer Jon Bonfiglio; “Bra-entrepreneur” Joy Slusarek of Manchester; Emmy award winning photographer and anthropologist Joshua Cogan; artisanal food entrepreneur Valentina Rice; speaker, consultant  and teacher Ann Zuccardy; and game designer Marguerite Dibble.

As part of the event, the first annual Local Chef Locavore Potluck Lunch celebrates Southern Vermont’s artisanal food community is preceded by a reception that includes a Vermont Cheese Station paired with Vermont brewed beer and imported wines.

Guests are invited to an after-party at TED Restaurant in Manchester, which will offer an opportunity to network and socialize.

Sept. 13: 21st Annual Bennington QuiltFest

Lynn Way and Barbara Windham of Chester and Bennington’s Quiet Valley Quilters’ Guild invite all to the Bennington QuiltFest 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School, 747 East Road, in Bennington.

More than 120 quilts will be on display. A special exhibit of quilted holiday pieces will also be shown. Michele Scott, the featured quilter, will present a lecture both days. There will be quilting tips and techniques demonstrations, door prizes, a raffle quilt drawing, vendors, a consignment boutique, food service and free parking. Admission is $7. Sept. 14: Opera Theatre to present highlights from ‘Secret Garden’

Secret GardenAt 2 p.m. on Sunday Sept. 14, The Opera Theatre of Weston will discuss and perform highlights from company’s upcoming production of The Secret Garden at Northshire Bookstore, 4869 Main St., in Manchester Center. Audiences will be treated to select musical numbers from show and treats handed out by children in Victorian costume.

Following the talk, children will be encouraged to join in a scavenger hunt and plant a secret garden in the newly landscaped area outside the bookstore.

Join the Chester Senior Citizens Club for bag lunch picnic 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, at the Pinnacle Recreation Area on Lover’s Lane Road in Chester.
