Nov. 13: Fiber Therapy in the Great Hall

The Community of Fiber group invites those interested in the fiber arts to show off what they do or to learn something new.
This new group will meet monthly beginning at 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in the Great Hall at One Hundred River St. in Springfield to share, learn, talk and enjoy the company of other fiber art addicts. All are welcome. Bring your rug hooking, knitting, needlepoint, quilting, felting, tatting, embroidery, rug braiding, whatever you create with fiber and a bag lunch.

Nov. 13: Political cartoonist Danziger at film screening, Q&A

Jeff Danziger, a political cartoonist, will present a talk from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13 as part of the Unrest: Art, Activism & Revolution exhibition at the Helen Day Art Center, 90 Pond St. in Stowe.

Danziger will talk for about 15 minutes before showing the French documentary, “Cartoonists, Footsoldiers of Democracy,” which features 12 political cartoonists from around the world.

DanzSUNJune32012wFollowing the film, Danziger will be available to answer questions. His newest book, “The Conscience of a Cartoonist: Instructions, Observations, Criticisms, Enthusiasms,”  will be available for purchase at the event and signing.

Danziger’s work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The New Yorker, the International Herald Tribune, the Moscow Times, among others. His work appears daily on the New York Times website, the Huffington Post and the National Memo. September Rain at Grounded4Life in November.

Nov. 14: September Rain comes to Chester

On Friday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. contemporary Christian band September Rain will perform at Grounded4Life, the coffee house in the lower level of the Chester Baptist Church, 162 Main St., in Chester.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with food, coffee, fellowship and conversation. The program is free and open to the public. Beginning in 2000, Lori Jo, her daughter Cassady and friend Lori Coronato formed the singing trio music in and around the New England area.

Joined by Kemp Schanlaber, Scott Ryder and Lee Baker, they continue to spread their faith through music and testimony. Additional information is available at here and at Grounded4Life’s Facebook page.

Nov. 15: 7th Annual Chester-Andover Blanket, Outerwear Giveaway

The Seventh Annual Chester-Andover Blanket and Outerwear Giveaway distribution will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Joseph’s Church Parish Hall at Routes 103 and 11 in Chester. Free food will be served. A second distribution will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the same location.

It is that time again to go through your linen and coat closets to find those articles that are no longer being used and donate them this giveaway. Collection boxes are available at Chester Town Hall, 556 Elm St. in Chester, Andover Town Hall, 953 Weston-Andover Road in Andover; Chester-Andover Elementary School, 72 Main St. in Chester; Green Mountain Union High School, 716 Route 103 South, Chester, and most churches in both towns.

Clean and wearable winter clothing including jackets, coats, boots, snowsuits, gloves, mitten, hats and warm blankets will be distributed to those in need.

Nov. 15: Ballad singers at Ludlow Auditorium

Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. Skip Gorman and Connie Dover, singers in the western and Celtic traditions will perform at Ludlow’s Town Hall Auditorium, 37 Depot St., Ludlow.

Cowboy singer Skip Gorman explores music from one of the most romanticized periods in American history. Using songs, stories, poetry and authentic instruments such as cross-tuned fiddle, cow camp banjo, bones and slide guitar, he transports audiences to the true American West of the 1800s.

Of Emmy award-winning soprano Connie Dover, the Boston Globe exclaimed, “Connie Dover is the finest folk ballad singer this country has produced since Joan Baez…”

The program is sponsored by Friends of Ludlow Auditorium. Tickets cost $15 and may be purchased from the FOLA website. Be sure to include your mailing name and address so that tickets can be sent to you. Nov. 16: Author Kiernan at Vermont Voices 2014

The third author in Misty Valley Books’ Vermont Voices 2014 series, Stephen P. Kiernan, will present his debut novel, “The Curiosity,” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the 1st Universalist Church in Chester’s Stone Village.

In “The Curiosity,” Dr. Kate Philo and her scientific expedition team discover the body of a man buried deep in ice in the Arctic. Philo’s scientific team has brought frozen small creatures—plankton, krill, shrimp—“back to life.” Never before have the team’s methods been attempted on a large life form—a life form who turns out to be a Massachusetts judge who fell overboard in the Arctic in 1906.

The final author in Vermont Voice series is former Gov. Jim Douglas on to be held on Sunday, Nov. 23. First elected to the Vermont House in 1972, just months after graduating from Middlebury College, Douglas was a four-term governor of Vermont. His memoir, “The Vermont Way,” recounts his political life and his belief that Vermont is different and that its leaders can work together to ensure prosperity and protect the state’s natural beauty.

Nov. 17: Chester Seniors Citizens Club luncheon meeting

Join the Chester Senior Citizens Club for their monthly luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Chester First Baptist Church on Main Street. A local vocalist will perform. Enjoy food and fellowship. Bring a place setting and a friend. If you need a ride, call 802-875-6242.
