UPDATE: Fund drive raises $2,100 for fuel assistance, donations still being accepted

Leigh Dakin, state representative and co-organizer for the annual Heating Fuel Fund and Food Assistance Drive said on Monday, Dec. 22 that thus far $2,100 has been raised to benefit local residents in need of financial help with heating bills.

On Monday, Dec. 15, the Chester and Andover Democrats raised $1,450 for the fund, knowing that more funds would come in following the event at Baba a Louis Bakery in Chester. At that event, about 30 residents of Chester and Andover as well as Springfield turned out to donate funds and nonperishable food items.

The money will go the Chester-Andover Family Center to be distributed to local residents residents who need help keeping their homes warm during the cold winter months. The food donations will be given to the CAFC food pantry.

The fund drive was begun by Pellett five years ago. Pellett noted that falling fuel prices will help donations go farther and help more families.

Since its inception in 2005, the drive has raised more than $17,000 for fuel assistance for local residents. Beginning in November of last year, every household receiving food assistance saw its benefits cut, so more and more Vermonters turned to their local food pantries to put food on their tables. “We’re not sure what the funding outlook is for this year for 3SquaresVT or heating fuel assistance, but we want to be sure that those in our community who have a need know that they can get help through the local community service organization,” the organizers say.
