Wilder Library seeks book donations for fund-raiser; Kids’ Cakes for Mom raises dough for Vermont Race for the Cure

Wilder Memorial Library at 24 Lawrence Hill Road in Weston is collecting used hardcover or paperback books, either for children or adults, for their Annual Book Sale fundraiser. They are also looking for DVDs and books on CD in good, working condition. They will not accept smelly, mildewed books, textbooks or encyclopedias. Donations will be accepted until Saturday, July 18. Donations can be dropped off in boxes at Wilder Memorial Library during our regular hours of operation. If you can’t get to the library to drop off books, schedule a home donation pick up by calling 802-824-4307. The book sale takes place 1–5 p.m. on Friday, July 24 and 9 a.m.–3 p.m. on Saturday, July 25. Komen_Trent-&-Drew-Louriew

Cake decorators Trent and Drew Lourie display their latest creations.

On May 8 and 9, Mother Myrick’s Confectionary in Mancheste was turned over to a group of kids, dads and a grandparent or two, to decorate and personalize a special cake to present to mom on Mother’s Day.

Mother Myrick’s provided the freshly baked cakes, decorating supplies and expert guidance. In return, the decorators were asked to donate $10 per cake, or whatever amount they could afford, to Susan G. Komen Vermont-New Hampshire’s Race for the Cure.

When all was said and done, there were quite a few proud sons, daughters and dads, with beaming and grateful moms. The event raised $479 to help fund breast cancer education, screening and treatment throughout the region.

Terry Farkas, Komen VT-NH executive director, said, “Our thanks go out to Jacki and Ron Baker for sponsoring this super-fun, annual cake-a-thon. We, as an organization, and all of the local folks we’re able to help thanks to events like this, are truly fortunate to live and work in such a caring and generous place.”

Visit Mother Myrick’s Facebook page for behind-the-scenes peeks of the kids and their accomplices in action; visit komenvtnh.org for more information on Komen Vermont-New Hampshire and the Komen Vermont Race for the Cure, at Riley Rink at Hunter Park, on July 18.
