Sept. 4: Game night and sundaes at Grounded4Life

Find old-fashioned fun at 7 p.m. on Friday Sept. 4 at Grounded4Life in the Chester Baptist Church at 162 Main St. Chester. Bring your favorite board game and all the fixing to make your own ice cream sundaes will be provided. No electronic games will be admitted. There will be a no-holds barred six-handed cribbage game.

Sept. 4: Veterans cemetery groundbreaking

The Office of Veterans Affairs for the state of Vermont will conduct a groundbreaking ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 at the cemetery in Randolph Center. Lt. Gov. Phil Scott and Major General Steven Cray, the Vermont adjutant general, will speak at the ceremony.

Vermont was recently awarded a $5.7 million grant from the National Cemetery Administration to expand the cemetery. The project will include construction of a public information center and a maintenance facility. Additionally, 1,640 additional burial plots will be added to include; 410 pre-placed crypts, 390 in-ground cremains plots, and 840 columbarium niches.

The cemetery sits on 110 acres in Randolph Center. In 1993, 18 acres were improved to construct the existing cemetery. This project will improve another 12 acres and allow year-round operations in this new expansion area. The cemetery serves all qualified veterans.

Sept. 5: Stellafane hosting free fall Star Parties

Stellafane is hosting two free fall Star Parties. According to Wikipedia: a star party is a gathering of amateur astronomers for the purpose of observing the sky.

The first party is at 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5 at Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site at 139 St. Gaudens Road, Cornish, N.H., in conjunction with the National Park Service. The evening starts with a talk about the history of astronomy in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. As darkness falls, there will be viewing through telescopes on the west-facing lawn, and members of the Springfield Telescopemakers will show attendees many interesting objects in the night sky and answer questions about astronomy. This has been a popular event in past years with good attendance.

Enjoy the autumn night sky one of two Star Parties hosted by Stellafane

The second is at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday Oct. 16-17 on the summit of Breezy Hill, 211 Jordan Road in Springfield.

Both events are free and open to the public. They will have lots of telescopes to look through, and knowledgeable club members to answer questions and show you what is in the night sky. More details can be found on its website www.Stellafane.org.

Sept. 5: Redford’s All is Lost at Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium

Friends of Ludlow Auditorium’s feature film for Saturday, Sept. 5, is 2013’s survival drama All is Lost.

Redford vs. the sea in ‘All is Lost,’ FOLA’s latest movie presentation.

The screening begins at 7 p.m. at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium, 37 Depot St. in Ludlow.

All is Lost stars Robert Redford in a solo part as a man lost at sea. The tale is not simply of man against the sea but man against himself.

Sept. 12: ‘A Night at the Museum’ at BRAM

he theme of Black River Academy Museum’s annual fundraiser is A Night at the Museum, which will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the museum, 14 High St., in Ludlow.

There will be wine, beer, hors d’oeuvres, live music and a wide selection of items in a silent auction. Items to be auctioned include Zumba classes, greens fees for four at Okemo Valley Golf Club and a guided tour at Green Mountain Sugar House with a half gallon of maple syrup and maple creamies and Subway, Big Eye’s Bakery and Cook’s Cupboard gift certificates.

The museum will raffle small theme baskets as well as a Treasure Hunt in which people will search for items somewhere in the museum.

Local restaurant Mr. Darcy’s is donating the food. Three to the Bar, a trio comprised of Camille Parker, Graham Parker and Jon Clinch, is donating the performance.

Sept. 12: Area hazardous waste collection day

The Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District is sponsoring free collection and safe disposal of household hazardous wastes from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Residents and businesses from Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Ludlow, Plymouth, Reading, Rockingham, Springfield, Weathersfield, West Windsor and Windsor can participate. No pre-registration needed for residents.

Businesses must pre-register and will be charged for disposal costs. The collections will be held at the Springfield Transfer Station on Fairground Road and at Bellows Falls Union High School on Route 5 South outside of Bellows Falls’ business district.
