Nov. 18: ‘Mary Poppins’ floats onto Northern Stage

Mary Poppins premieres at the new Barrette Center for the Arts at 74 Gates St. in White River Junction, Nov. 18 and runs through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2016. On opening night, Saturday, Nov. 21, the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. followed by a complimentary post-show reception with the cast.

The musical revolves around the adventures that begin when a nanny magically appears in the Banks’ household. Mary Poppins is recommended for ages 5 and up. Matinees at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. will be offered to encourage families to attend the performance together. Visit the website for the full schedule and performance times.

As part of the Athena Series, a free companion event will be presented designed to promote dialogue between audience members and theater professionals. It will be held in the Byrne Theater at the Barrette Center for the Arts on Sunday, Nov. 22 from 12:30–1:30 p.m. Steve Swayne, professor of music at Dartmouth College, will lead the conversation.

Discounted tickets are available for preview performances Nov. 18–20; $15 Anytime Student tickets are available for any performance, regular adult ticket prices range from $30–$65.

Nov. 21: FOLA presents ‘12 Years a Slave’

November’s film offering by Friends of the Ludlow Auditorium is 12 Years a Slave. The movie will be shown at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium 37 S. Depot St. in Ludlow.

Rated R, 12 Years a Slave is a period drama and an adaptation of the 1853 slave narrative memoir  by Solomon Northup, a New York State-born free African-American man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., in 1841 and sold into slavery.

Nov. 22: Mosher  next up for Vermont Voices

The last author in  Misty Valley Book’s Vermont Voices 2015 series will be Howard Frank Mosher, one of America’s most acclaimed writers. The free event is at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22 at the First Universalist Church, 211 North St. in the Stone Village in Chester.

Mosher will discuss his recent book, God’s Kingdom, which explores the Kinneson family and its history, through the coming of age of its heir, Jim.

Nov. 22: A capella group Raises the Roof in Proctorsville

The next concert in the Raise the Roof music series at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22 is the a capella group House Blend. The series takes place at Gethsemane Episcopal Church 89 Depot St. in Proctorsville.

House Blend is 20 performers whose repertoire includes gospel, village music from Africa and Eastern Europe, Renaissance madrigals, Bach and contemporary music.

The admission price of $10 will allow Raise the Roof Concert Series to continue bring live musical voices to the local community at an affordable price.
