A 33-year-old Springfield man has been charged with assault and robbery and aggravated assault in the knifepoint robbery of the Cavendish General Store on Monday.

According to the Vermont State Police, Joshua Corliss was picked up by Chester Police late last night and taken to the Vermont Police Barracks in Rockingham. He is being held at Southern State Correctional Facility on $50,000 and has an initial court date at Windsor Superior Court at 12:30 p.m. today.

State Police said that during the robbery, a male held a knife to the female attendant’s throat and demanded cash from the register.  The attendant’s husband ran from the back of the store to the front, confronting the robber with a machete.

Police said that while the robber lunged at both victims with the knife, neither was harmed.  Although the robber was hit with the machete, he also was not injured and was able to leave the store carrying the cash register, which he dropped in the parking lot before escaping to a nearby car.

Police said that evidence from the scene and surveillance video from other locations helped identify a suspect, who turned himself in Tuesday night. According to State Police, at the time of his arrest, Corliss had an active arrest warrant for failing to appear in Windsor Court in October.
