Jan. 21: Music at Flat Iron Exchange in Bellows Falls

Area musicians Jesse Peters and Tim Morton will perform a set of original and cover music at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21 at The Flat Iron Exchange, 51 the Square in Bellows Falls. There is no cover. Peters plays acoustic guitar and sings and Morton plays drums. This performance combines Peters’  acoustic stylings with Morton’s creative approach to drums and percussion.

Pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute kicks off Marlboro College’s Spring Concert Series

Marlboro College spring series of weekend concerts begins with pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute at 3 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 23 in Marlboro’s Ragle Hall, 2582 South Road in Marlboro. The series features leading performers in both classical and jazz. Other than the opening concert, all performances are on Sundays at 3 p.m., and are free and open to the public.

The second concert is at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 6 when  pianist and Marlboro favorite Renana Gutman returns to Ragle Hall. On April 3, the David Bindman Sextet will take the stage of Ragle Hall with what has been described by critic Mike Shanley as “a new, forceful strain of jazz.” On April 10, the college hosts violinist Andrew Eng and pianist Tae Kim. On April 17, the concert series concludes with the Allos Musica Ensemble of James Falzone, a clarinetist, composer and improviser who works at the intersection of jazz, classical and world music traditions.

Jan. 23: VT Shakedown at Pizza Stone

VT Shakedown will perform from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the at the Pizza Stone restaurant at 291 Pleasant St. in Chester.

VT Shakedown draws inspiration from the Afrobeat, funk and West African traditions with a tight rhythm section interacting with horn solos, polyrhythms laced among political lyrics, repeating bass and guitar lines underneath funky drums. For information visit www.facebook.com/vtshakedown or call 802-275-7307.

Jan. 23: Brattleboro Concert Choir Evokes A Luminous Night

On Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m., at Brattleboro’s Centre Congregational Church on 193 Main St., the Brattleboro Concert Choir, directed by Susan Dedell, will present “Luminous Night,” featuring the music of  Morten Lauridsen, John Tavener, and Ola Gjeilo. The 90-voice choir is known for its diverse programming and moving performances.

Discover your unique voice during this three-part vocal improvisation workshop, which is open to anyone who enjoys singing. No experience is necessary.

At 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, Thursday, Jan. 28 and Monday, Feb. 1, Bidi Dworkin, a jazz singer and yoga teacher, will be at Neighborhood Connections, 5700 Vermont Route 100, Londonderry to lead the group of interactive singing. Each session begins with gentle stretching to tune the body and awaken the breath, so participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing.
