Ian McGrath, 52, loved coaching, was devoted to his four children

Ian Bernard McGrath died suddenly at his Chester, VT, home on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016. He was 52.

Mr. McGrath was born on Sept. 1, 1963 in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Bernard and Mary Donaldson McGrath.

Mr. McGrath, a 1981 graduate of Bellows Falls Union High School, was employed by the Vermont Country Store in Rockingham.

He served for six years in the U.S. Marines during the 1st Gulf War and was a member of both the American Legion Post 67 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both located in Chester.

Mr. McGrath is survived by four minor children: sons Callum, Ewan and Graeme, and daughter Kaitlyn, all of Chester; his mother Mary McGrath, his brother Barton McGrath of Saxtons River and his girlfriend Holly Clayton. Mr. McGrath was predeceased by his father in 2015.

He is remembered by friends for his devotion to his children. He loved sports and had also been an engaging children’s coach in the local sports scene, having coached for a number of years with the Chester Recreation Department. He also shared his love of hockey with his three sons. He is also remembered for his celebration of his  Scottish heritage.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home, 55 Westminster St., in Bellows Fall. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
