At about 9:42 p.m. Friday emergency personnel responded to the middle of Townshend  after a 2008 BMW driven by a 71-year-old Noank, Conn., man  crashed into the gazebo in the center of the Common.

Vermont State Police report that David U. Page had been driving north on Route 30 when the car left the road, traveled 158 feet across the Town Common and came to a stop after hitting the gazebo.

Police administered a breath test resulting in a .181 percent blood alcohol level. Page was arrested for driving under the influence and held at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield until he was sober.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges in the Windham Criminal Division of the Vermont Superior Court on Feb. 9.

Both the gazebo and the car were damaged. The driver was not injured.

In an entertaining detail, state police also report that the gazebo had been constructed for the 1988 Chevy Chase movie “Funny Farm,” which Rotten Tomatoes’ readers gave 3.5 out of 5 stars.
