With temperatures just above zero and winds making it feel even colder, a large number of hearty adults and kids still turned out at the Pinnacle Recreation Area to enjoy winter sports on Saturday.

In addition to sledding on a bumpy course, those in attendance could play disc golf or take a sleigh ride behind Sarah and Betsy, Peter Hudkins’ Suffolk draft horses.

The horses gave 10 rides in the big sleigh with some thrilling speeds reached racing down the hill toward the end of the run.

Gary King and Nick Kekic set up a disc golf course behind the pavilion and seemed unfazed by the weather.

Nearly a dozen kids were shooting down the hill often bouncing off their sleds on bumps.

Down Main Street from the Pinnacle, Scott and Leslie Blair were holding Grand Opening celebrations of their Southern Pie Company. A two-hour pie-tasting was held and raised $100 to benefit the Chester Recreation Department, which organized the Winter Carnival.

Winter Carnival continues

Several events were postponed due to the frigid conditions so the fun is not over yet.

Events that were moved to Saturday Feb. 27 include:

  • 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Broom Hockey at Cobleigh Field. $25 per team (six person minimum) and teams must supply a referee for games they are not playing in.
  • 6 to 8 p.m. at Cobleigh Field: Wood Sculpture Fire with Barre Pinske, Skate Party and Bonfire.
