Allen Brothers Oil sought police assistance in recovering money from a debit card purchase of oil, which came back for insufficient funds. The purchaser, who lives along Flamstead Road, had been sent a 10-day notice for recovery of funds, but never responded. Police contacted the resident, telling her that she had two days to pay — by a bank check or money order — or she would be subject to criminal charges and would be arrested.  On April 19, police were notified that the bill had been paid.

Tuesday, April 12, 1:23 p.m.

Police responded to a motor vehicle crash on Route 103 North near Baileys Mills Road in Chester. Police found a Subaru Forester that had rolled over an embankment and a good Samaritan who had witnessed the accident and was helping with traffic. The witness said that he was coming around the corner as the Subaru was rolling in the road and down the embankment and did not see what caused the accident. The driver, who was sitting in another car, stated that she was traveling north at around 50 mph, the car jerked and she went off the road and started to roll. She said that her back and neck were sore and she had some scrapes. She was taken to Springfield Hospital by ambulance.  Marks in the road indicated that she went off the road on the northbound side and traveled off the road into a grassy area, then returned to the road sideways when the car started to roll.

Tuesday, April 19, 12:45 a.m.

Police responded to a call from Benny’s Towing concerning an accident on Reservoir Road, in which a blue Volvo had slid off the road so that both passenger side tires were in mud. Two women, both in their 30s, were standing in front of the vehicle. Both appeared to have bloodshot and watery eyes, and the officer could smell “the odor of intoxication beverage” coming from both. The owner of the car refused to take a portable breath test, but did take a field sobriety test. She was arrested under suspicion of DUI. The Benny’s driver gave her passenger a ride home and the Volvo owner was processed at Rockingham, where she claimed that she drank a beer waiting for the tow. Contacted later, the tow truck driver said he did not see a beer can or bottle in or around the vehicle. She also took a breath test at 2:48 a.m. and registered a .144 percent BAC.

Sunday, May 8, 6:24 a.m.

Police were sent to Route 103 South, near Peck Road following a motor vehicle crash with a rollover. The red Mini Cooper was down the embankment and partially upside down with a woman still in the car and screaming for help, and saying that her arm was pinned beneath the vehicle. Fire Department crews were able to extricate her, and she was transported by Chester Ambulance to Springfield Hospital, then transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock for injuries including a broken sternum and bruised heart. From the roadway marks, it appeared that the car had left the road about 100 feet from where it came to rest. It had apparently hit a culvert, causing it to become airborne, then landed nose-first, flipping twice more hood to trunk, landing, then rolling down the bank before stopping. After the driver was released from the hospital, she told police that she was traveling south on Route 103, at about 55 mph, when she reached over to change the CD and went of the road.  She added that she remembers the car flipping during the entire ordeal and was praying that it would stop.

Sunday, May 8, 12:32 p.m.

A person complained that a neighbor on Watkins Road was allowing their dogs to run loose, mauling and harassing her chickens. Police made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the dogs owners.

Tuesday, May 10, 7:18 p.m.

A single-car crash occurred on Flamstead Road at Kirk Meadow Road, causing major front passenger side damage to a white Subaru. The driver was not injured, but a witness said she had just turned onto Flamstead from Kirk Meadow when she met the other driver heading down the hill. She felt he was driving too fast, but that he remained on his side of the road. She saw his car leave the roadway and thought it was due to the gravel shoulder. As she looked in her rear view mirror, she also saw the car skid across Kirk Meadow, and crash into the tree.  The Subaru driver said that the crash occurred because another car had come around the corner on his side of the road and forced him off the road. But the witness said she saw no other vehicles. The Subaru driver was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. Police also found that his license was under criminal suspension as of May 1 and that he had a recent DUI conviction.

However, at 10:55 p.m. police were called because the resident had reignited the fire. He was told to put it out again.  He will be cited for the unpermitted burn.

Police had received reports of an aggressive dog living on High Street, chasing after pedestrians and attacking their dogs. Police met with the owner and the dog, which is about 9 years old and seemed very friendly and not aggressive. The owner was very surprised to hear the complaints and said his dog doesn’t go past the fence line. He said his dog was up-to-date on rabies vaccines but was not yet registered in Chester. Police urged him to get the dog registered.

Thursday, May 12, 9:48 a.m.

A Trebo Road resident told the town manager that his neighbor’s cow had calved the day before but that the calf was down behind his house and out of the shed. He said he was worried about the calf’s health. Police located the owner’s wife, who called her daughter to help retrieve the calf. The calf looked fine and was walking around with its mother. All the cows looked good and had hay, water and shelter.

Thursday, May 12, 10:32 p.m.

A Chester officer responded to  a report that a woman on Route 103 North had been sexually assaulted by her landlord and that the landlord and her boyfriend were arguing. After speaking with the woman who said the landlord had touched her in an especially inappropriate way, the officer asked the landlord what had happened and he confirmed much of the story saying that the woman “seemed like she wanted me to…”  The woman was taken to the hospital while the landlord was booked on charges of lewd and lascivious conduct and unlawful mischief and held at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield in lieu of $1,000 bail.
