July 7: Play Bali at Rockingham Library

Celia Bohannon and friends share the vintage game of Bali from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 7 at the Rockingham Library, 65 Westminster St. in Bellows Falls. This program is free and open to the public.

Bali is a word building game from the 1950s, similar to Scrabble using cards instead of tiles. Because players can see one another’s cards, the game takes on a more social bent. Adults and kids (fourth grade and up) are welcome to play.

More Bali games are planned for July and August. If these spark enough interest, a monthly afternoon Bali club may be formed. For more information, call 802-463-4270, visit rockinghamlibrary.org or stop by the library.

Gene Tierney, left, and Rex Harrison.

The film, a romantic fantasy starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, is based on a 1945 novel written by Josephine Leslie under the pseudonym of R.A. Dick.

In the early 1900s, young widow Lucy Muir, played by Tierney moves to the seaside English village of Whitecliff despite the fierce disapproval of her caterwauling mother-in-law and domineering sister-in-law. Despite its reputation of being haunted, she falls in love with and rents Gull Cottage, where she takes up residence with her young daughter Anna, played by Natalie Wood. On the first night, the ghostly apparition of the former owner, a sea captain named Daniel Gregg, played by Harrison, visits her.

The film is free; donations are appreciated. Berkshire Bank supplies free popcorn and FOLA offers free water. For additional information, call 802-228-7239 or visit FOLA’s web site at www.fola.us. Suggest a movie for FOLA’s next season by emailing info@fola.us.
