Oct 4: Big Buzz Chainsaw Carving Festival

The seventh annual Big Buzz Chainsaw Carving Festival will be held Tuesday, Oct. 4 through Monday, Oct. 10. This year’s event will be held at the former home of Black River Produce at 2568 Vermont Route 103 in Cavendish.

The Quick Carve Event runs from 10 a.m. at 1 p.m. Friday through Monday. Artists will be carving their pieces in an hour and will then auction off directly after. Saturday night they will be doing fire sculptures.

Twenty-five artists from across the country are expected, including Vermont carvers Brandon Wilson from Jay and Peter Auchmoody from Bellows Falls. Metal sculptor Barbie The Welder will join in this year.

Oct. 5: Discover found poetry at Whiting

Whiting Library at 117 Main St. in Chester invites you to learn to create found poetry. Taught by Susan Powers Bourne, the class is from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 5, Nov. 9 and Dec. 7. Bring paper pad and pencil. Attend one or all of the free workshops.

Cut-up, erasure and pick-and-mix are some of the methods the group will learn as they begin to explore the fertile fields of found poetry.

Workshop is designed for adults. Due to limited attendance they ask people to sign up in advance at the library by email or phone.

Oct. 6: Talk on living with a learning disability

On Thursday, Oct. 6, at 5:15 p.m., Townsend Gilbert will be the guest speaker for Chester Rotary’s monthly First Thursday evening meeting at the Fullerton Inn on The Common in Chester. Gilbert will discuss the impact his dyslexia had on him as a child, as a young adult and as a successful entrepreneur and businessman. He will detail his own experiences and share his strategies for success as a learning disabled adult.

This event is free, open to the public. Hors d’oeuvres will be served. Reservations are not necessary but the group recommends registering at chestervtrotary@gmail.com.

9780252080791Oct. 6: Jane Beck speaks on ‘Daisy Turner’s Kin’

On Thursday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m., Vermont folklorist Jane Beck tells the story of the Turner family, a multigenerational saga spanning two centuries at the Grafton Inn’s Phelps Barn at 92 Main St.

Daisy Turner, who had listened to her father Alec Turner, recounted the stories of the family to Beck. Her captivating narrative covers the early 19th century British-African trade, shipwreck, birth of a biracial child, slave trading, enslavement, plantation life, escape, Civil War, moving north, battling racism, buying land and settling on a hilltop in Grafton. Daisy Turner also shared her own life story, a powerful and rare account of the African American experience in New England from the 1880s forward.

Oct. 8: S. Derry Library holds Street Fair

The South Londonderry Free Library holds its “Fourth Greater than Ever” South Derry Street Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday 
Oct. 8. It will be held on the grounds of the library and the Town Office at 15 Old School Road in South Londonderry.

This is a community-wide tag sale. Vendors include local residents and businesses. There’ll be crafters demonstrating and selling their creations and a White Elephant Booth. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Oct. 8: CAFC holds Annual Christmas Tent & Bake Sale

Chester-Andover Family Center’s Second Annual Christmas Under the Tent is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 908 Route 103 South in Chester. The center’s bake sale is part of the festivities. Pick up a dessert for dinner or something to have with your morning coffee.

Christmas Under the Tent offers holiday items including gifts, toys, items for your holiday table, artificial trees, and decorations. The Thrift Shop will be open as well.

The money raised during this event is used to support the Center’s Food Shelf and Emergency Financial Assistance program where assistance is provided to individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet. The Center’s mission is to provide a helping hand to persons and families in need.

Thrift Shop hours are Tuesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday, noon to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food Shelf hours are 1 to 6 p.m. every Thursday and Friday 10 to noon for Produce Pickup. Oct. 8: Chili Cook-Off to benefit Meals on Wheels

A Chili Cook-Off will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 — rain or shine — under the tent on Depot Street by the traffic light in Ludlow.

The cook-off sponsored by Ludlow Rotary offers up to two dozen varieties of chili, including traditional, vegetarian and exotic. The cost to the public is $10 for all-you-can-eat served in a collectible mug, while supplies last. There’s also cider, bread and ice cream. Funds raised will benefit the Black River Valley Senior Center’s  Meals on Wheels program.

Participants vie for cash prizes in three People’s Choice categories: First ($200), Second ($100) and Third ($50). The Rotary appointed judges will award plaques for Favorite, Spiciest and Team Spirit.

Fastest Kid in Town Race

Who will win the crown as the Fastest Kid in Town? The Fastest Kid in Town will take place at noon during the Vermont Apple Festival at Riverside Park on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The Fastest Kid in Town Race is an effort to raise awareness of the importance of fitness and activity for young children. It’s free and open to children ages 5–12.

The goal is to see 100 children competing for the title in the 100- and 200-yard races. Participants will compete in four age categories and the male and female winners of each category will receive a medal. All participants will receive a race logo T-shirt for their efforts.

Pre-registration is recommended, but not required, by contacting the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center.

Oct. 8: Springfield Elementary School PTA comedy night

The comedians performing are Rob Steen, Mark Scalia and Jody Sloan. This event is for adults only. Proceeds from this event will support Springfield’s elementary schools to supplement purchase of supplies, school activities and other special events.

The event also features a silent auction with various adventurous and handy gift baskets, raffle prizes and other fundraising activities.

On Sunday, Oct. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m., at the museum at 1958 Main St. in Cavendish, the CHS will share the stories members have been collecting and will also hear the audience. This is a free event open to the public.

Three-time Pinkest Pony winners KaitLynn Jones and Mickey

The seventh Annual Komen Vermont Ride for the Cure kicks off on Monday, Oct. 10 at the Green Mountain Horse Association in South Woodstock. Registration opens at 8 a.m., and a pre-ride briefing at 9 a.m.

The Ride, a 9- or 12-mile horseback trail ride, directly benefits Susan G. Komen VT-NH and the local families fighting breast cancer.

The ride is a “Bring Your Own Horse” event. Each participant pays a $25 registration fee and commits to raising a minimum of $250, or $150 for Youth Riders, ages 12–17 years old. Registration fees cover the event’s expenses and are counted toward the Rider’s minimum.
