To the editor: On Nov. 8, vote for what is right

As legend journalist Bob Schieffer said on CBS, “How did we ever get to this point?” As moderator Chuck Todd said to Joe Biden on Meet the Press, “We have a coarse culture that gives permission to sexual abuse.” Biden responded, “This guy acknowledged he is a sexual predator and abused his power!”

letters-to-the-editor-logoHow did we ever allow an amoral, narcissistic, mentally unfit person reach so deeply into people’s minds?

How did we ever get to sexual harassment and abuse dismissed as locker room talk? How did we get to the point of escalation of bullying in schools, media and our overall society? How did we get to hatred and belittlement of different ethnicities and handicapping conditions? As the next history books are written, Donald Trump will be represented as a bully, a white supremacist, a fascist and demagogue.

Children are being exposed to the darkness, the underground of America that has risen steadily since he announced his candidacy for president of the United States. He is not ‘making America great again;’ he is imploding the divisiveness and inciting violence in America.

Is this the kind of role model we will allow our children to hold in respect and admiration as the leader of the free world? This is a man who not only degrades women and immigrants, but a man whose irreverent behaviors are held in esteem by an ignorant culture that is becoming a dominant part of our society.

What has happened to the culture of America who works hard honestly, consistently and lawfully? We are holding a criminal in respect, when he hasn’t paid his taxes for two decades and admits he is “smart and plays tricks on the system.”

This is a man who has three New York State lawsuits for defrauding uneducated and the elderly in the Trump University scheme. Is this what we have come to? Is this the America we want for ourselves and our families? Is this America’s legacy?

Additionally, with his last declaration of defiance toward the historical act of allowing a respectful transition of power at the end of the election, he is undercutting the essence and legitimacy of our American democracy.

Please vote on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016 with a conscious conscience for American values based on equality, morality and diversity. As Martin Luther King uttered, “The time is always right to do what is right.” Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that!

I realize you want what you want, but you can’t twist the facts enough to make Hillary Clinton look like anything but a criminal. Donald Trump’s transgressions pale in comparison to those of Hillary Clinton. He wasn’t my first choice, but I’ll tell you. You have galvanized my support of the only person who will make the hard choices that need to be made in keeping this nation running sustainably. Racist, xenophobe, bigot? Say it all you want. Doesn’t make it true. My head and my heart tells me I can trust Trump way more than Hillary.

So, since we don’t have a candidate in either major party that can serve as a role model or be held up to high standards of ethics and morality, what do we do, stay home?
