West River Farmers Market ends summer season; Commuters urged to take the challenge and save

END OF SUMMER: The West River Farmers Market, at Routes 10 and 100, ended its summer season over the weekend. Here’s a quick look at the final taste of summer, dressed up in fall colors. A winter market will be held beginning this Saturday, Oct. 19, at Flood Brook School in Londonderry, 2 miles west of the current site on Route 10. The market, located at Routes 11 and 100, ended its summer season for the year on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Take the commuter challenge

Upper Valley residents will take part in the Way to Go! “commuter challenge” this week through Friday, Oct. 18. The theme for the week’s campaign, “Stop Zombie Commuting,” encourages participants to avoid driving alone and to instead try a more “lively” way of getting around. Participants pledge to take the bus, bike, walk, carpool, car share, or telecommute during the week of the challenge, and become eligible to win a variety of prizes.

“We’re really thrilled with the response we are seeing this year,” said Carol Weston of the Vermont Energy Investment Corp., a lead organizer of the challenge. “When people take advantage of commuting options, they save big money.” Last year, more than 700 Upper Valley residents participated in Way to Go! and collectively saved more than $20,000.

Participation in the challenge has continued to grow since it was first held in 2006.

To help meet the challenge, area bus company Connecticut River Transit will provide free rides on Friday, Oct. 18. Other organizing partners include Southern Windsor County Regional Planning Commission, Two Rivers Ottauquechee Regional Commission, and Vital Communities.
