Feb. 5: Weston neighbors invited to weekly trivia night

Weston community members are invited to a weekly trivia extravaganza at The Inn At Weston, 630 Main St. in Weston, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. These Neighbors Game Nights will be held through May and will help raise money for local community-serving organizations.

An inexpensive pub menu of comfort food plus weekly specials will be offered on these nights. Reservations at NGN costs $5 per person and all funds raised through reservations, plus any additional donations given at NGN, will be given to one of the following organizations each week:

The Little School; Weston Volunteer Fire Department; Londonderry Volunteer Rescue Squad; Wilder Memorial Library; Just Neighbors; Weston Recreation Club; Church on the Hill; Old Parish Church; Weston Priory; Weston Community Association; Weston Historical Society; Mountain Valley Medical Clinic and the Weston Playhouse Theatre Co.

NGN trivia starts at 7 p.m. sharp and the winning team gets free dessert. The maximum team size is six. All patrons are automatically entered in a  raffle and the prize is dinner free that night. Feb. 8: Whiting Library hosts gallery open house

Throughout February and March, A Place of Mind, a gallery showing of Wendy Schwarz’s work, will be featured at the Whiting Library, 117 Main St., Chester. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, there will be an open house to meet the artist and view her works. Schwarz’s work has been described both abstract and realistic. In addition to Schwarz’s work, the library will hang the works of her son, Michael Schwarz. Both artists are available for design and art commissions. The library is open Monday and Friday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m.–8 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

Feb. 9: Misty Valley Books presents four poets

Misty Valley Books, on the Green in Chester, will host a group of accomplished poets on at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9. The event is free and open to the public. A reception and book-signing will follow the readings.

Former Chester resident Rick Bates will read from his published works. Bates’ poetry has been seen in Vermont Folkus, Naugatuck River Review, The Dark Horse, Poets Against the War, Rat’s Ass Review and Astronomers Without Borders. His work can be found alongside other authors, poets, photographers and artists in the recently published On Vermont Time…

Pat Fargnoli, former poet laureate of New Hampshire and author of six collections of poetry, will read from her latest book, Winter, which weaves together themes of solitude, silence and rebirth through vivid images of winter and the outdoors.

James Fowler explores nature and war in Japanese poetic forms in Falling Ashes. Winner of the Poetry Society of New Hampshire’s National Poetry Contest, he’s editor of Heartbeat of New England: Anthology of Contemporary Nature Poetry.

Tim Mayo, widely published and the winner of numerous awards and fellowships, will read from The Kingdom of Possibilities, poems that reflect the complications of understanding oneself with charm and wit.

Feb. 11: David McGaw SoVera

Southern Vermont Astronomy Group will meet 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at its new meeting facility — the ski school on the main level at Magic Mountain in Londonderry. The speaker will be David McGaw of Dartmouth University, who will speak on the history and function of timekeeping and time dissemination, looking at the ever-increasing precision of solar to astronomical to atomic time, from days and years down to sub-femtoseconds. Feb. 14: Valentine’s dance to benefit Londonderry’s Pingree Park revitalization

Looking for a night of dinner, dancing and great music this Valentine’s Day?  Dr. T and the Versatiles bring their ‘60s and ‘70s horn-driven rock, rhythm and blues and soul music to the Magic Mountain Base Lodge in Londonderry at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, all to benefit the Pingree Park Revitalization Project.  The Black Line Tavern in the Base Lodge will be open for dinner and drinks.  Tickets for the dance may be purchased in advance at the Green Mountain Pharmacy in the Mountain Marketplace or at the door.  Admission will be $8  for a single and $15 per couple.  (Food and drink are not included in admission.)

Dr. T and the Versatiles was formed by Dr. Terry Ryan of Springfield, VT, a chiropractor who plays the trumpet.  Among the 10 musicians who make up the band are: Meredith Robinson, of Chicopee, MA, on vocals; Ed Cohen (trumpet); Joan Timberlake (sax); Liz Ryan (trombone); Al Kuchas (guitar); Steve Osterlund (bass); Dan Williams (keyboards); Brian Morris (percussion) and Mick Arace (drums).

In addition to great music and dancing, the Parks Board has assembled some great raffle items.  There will be about 30 items raffled off throughout the night including a cord of firewood, a half gallon of maple syrup and gift certificates to Belly Fit and Yoga classes.

March 11: YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program

Springfield Health Center announced its partnering with the Vermont Blueprint for Health and the Greater Burlington YMCA to offer the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program beginning 6–7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at the Springfield Health Center at 100 River St. in Springfield,  VT. Lifestyle coach Lara Peck from SHC will lead the sessions.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program will be offered free of charge to help adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the illness.  The program provides a supportive environment where participants work together in a small group to learn about healthier eating, and increasing their physical activity in order to reduce their risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Participants will meet weekly for 16 weeks. After 16 weeks, participants meet monthly and get support in maintaining their progress.
