Three area students have been selected to join 21 other Vermont students at OPUS 28, 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30 at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium, 37 Depot St., in Ludlow as classical musicians play their original compositions. The area students honored are Erik Heitsmith, grade 5, and Rosie Saccardo, grade 5, both from Ludlow Elementary School, and Abby Crowley, grade 6, from Mt. Holly Elementary School.

The students, with the help of music teacher Constance Wilcox and the on-line musical composition computer programs ‘Inside Music’ and ‘Noteflight,’ created their own compositions. They were then submitted to Music-COMP. About 24 of these compositions were selected for the April 30 concert in Ludlow. Professional classical musicians, including some members of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, will play the compositions.

The OPUS program is run by Music-COMP, an Essex Junction, Vt.,-based organization that serves more than 7,000 students each year encouraging exploration of music composition in classrooms and at home. Music-COMP hosts two live concerts each year; a winter event featuring brass, percussion, piano and voice, and another concert in the spring featuring strings and woodwinds. Throughout the year, the work of individual students is featured in numerous other concerts in collaboration with other performing organizations, such as the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Burlington Chamber Orchestra, Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble, Champlain Philharmonic and Montpelier Chamber Orchestra.
