July 1: A new Cold War? Daniloff lecture series at Misty Valley

Are we entering a new Cold War in our relations with Russia? Starting at 7 p.m. on July 1 and continuing for the next three consecutive Tuesdays, Nick Daniloff will speak about the situation in Russia and Ukraine at Misty Valley Books, on the Green in Chester.

Andover resident Daniloff recently retired as a Northeastern University professor of Journalism. Prior to that, he spent his journalism career covering the Cold War from Washington and Moscow from 1961-1986 for U.S. News & World Report.

Daniloff is the author of The Kremlin and the Cosmos (1972), Two Lives, One Russia (1988) and Of Spies and Spokesmen: My Life as a Cold War Correspondent (2008).

The series is free and open to the public, although a free-will offering would be welcome to help support future bookstore programs.

July 1: Bread and Puppet Theater events

Bread and Puppet Theater presents a series of programs throughout July. The events take place at the Paper Mache Cathedral and Bread and Puppet Farm located on Route 122 in Glover.

  • On Tuesdays through July and August at 7:30 p.m. Bread and Puppet Theater begins with Shape Note Sing at Bread and Puppet, presenting early American four-part hymns in the Fa-Sol-La-Mi tradition. The program continues every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. through August. All welcome, no experience necessary. This performance is free.
  • At 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 5 will be the Bread and Puppet Community Circus Rehearsal. The public is invited to join BPT’s free circus rehearsal on Saturday. The performance will take place the following Sunday. All ages are welcome.
  • On Sunday July 6 at 2 p.m. Bread and Puppet’s “The Nothing is Not Ready Circus and Pageant” presents the not-yet-existing up-riser masses sharing this circus and pageant and their political and apolitical movements.

Museum tours begin at 1 p.m. and sideshows at 2 p.m. The circus starts at 3 p.m. Suggested donations $10 but no one will be turned away if lack of ability to pay. For more information call Elka at 802-525-6972.

July 2: Rockingham Library holds genealogy workshops

The Rockingham Free Public Library is offering workshops to help people learn how to use online resources in  genealogy research. The workshop will take place from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Wednesdays through July.
Bring a laptop computer or tablet and join Wayne Blanchard for hands-on sessions to learn how to use Internet databases to help research your family history.

On July 2, participants will learn how to use Ancestry.com Library Edition to search the U.S. Census records.

On July 9, discover how AmericanAncestors.org can help find genealogical information with the Historical and Genealogical Register.
Finally, on July 16 Heritage Quest will be accessed to research local history through Census records, and 28,000 family and local histories in the Books section. Google Books and HathiTrust, free websites that contain local histories, will also be addressed.

July 9: Master storyteller at Wilder  Library

Vermont-based master storyteller Peter Burns will appear at Wilder Memorial Library, 24 Lawrence Hill Road, Weston from 10:30–11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9. The free program is open to all ages.

Burns combines the magic of storytelling with the wonders of science in everyday life. Each story is illustrated with a scientific principle or experiment. All stories include audience participation. The event is made possible by a grant from the Vermont Country Store.

The library will host a different activity every Wednesday in July. July 9: Cavendish kicks off 2014 music series with Gypsy Reel

The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association and the Town of Cavendish invite everyone to spend an evening on the Proctorsville Green beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 when the annual summer music series begins. To start the six-week series, CCCA presents Gypsy Reel. Bring a blanket or a comfortable chair, have a picnic, or lay back and relax on the grass. This will be the first of six concerts that are held on consecutive Wednesday nights in July and August. The concerts are free and open to all.

Sponsored by Okemo Mountain Resort, Gypsy Reel plays high energy, stirring music rooted in the Celtic tradition. Its music is a synthesis of world rhythms and influences and features a blend of traditional and original music.

July 9: Misty Valley Books offers Italian language classes

Misty Valley Books will offer two levels of Italian language classes beginning in July. A beginner’s class starts 7–8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, and will continue for six weeks. An advance class begins 7–8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, meeting for six consecutive Thursdays. The beginner’s course is recommended for people with little or no experience with Italian. The advanced course will teach intermediate Italian grammar. The classes meet at the bookstore, 58 Common St., in Chester. Luci Fortunato, professor emerita of history from Bridgewater State University  will teach both sessions.

July 11: GM Aerobatic contest at Hartness State Airport

The New England Aerobatic Club will host its annual Green Mountain Aerobatic Contest at the Hartness State Airport running 8 a.m. Friday, July 11 through 5 p.m. Sunday, July 13 at 15 Airport Road, North Springfield. Thursday July 10 is a day for competitors to practice their routines prior to the event. Visitors are welcome to come to the airport to see the airplanes and talk to the pilots.

The competition begins early Friday afternoon and will end late Sunday morning to early afternoon depending on the weather.

The New England Aerobatic Club is Chapter 35 of the International Aerobatic Club. The IAC is a division of the Experimental Aircraft Association, which promotes and governs the sport of Competition Aerobatics in the United States.

Weston Playhouse logoAug. 4: Deadline to sign up for annual London Theatre Tour

The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company conducts its annual London Theatre Tour, visiting the capital of the English-speaking theater world, from Nov. 4 to 13. Weston Producing Artistic Director Steve Stettler and London tour director Giles Ramsay will again be leading the group. They are now accepting registrations until the Aug. 4 deadline. Space is limited.

Tour members will spend nine nights at The Montague on the Gardens. The package includes six plays, a concert, special meals and a series of lectures and discussions. July 15: Living Well with a Disability series

The Vermont Center for Independent Living will present a series of classes on Living Well with a Disability, most taking place 10 a.m.- noon every Tuesday from July 15 through Aug. 19 in Room 266, Asa Bloomer Building, 88 Merchants Row, Rutland.

The individual class schedule is:

  • July 15:  Staying Active, Happy & Healthy Through Exercise, featuring Tom Alcorn, senior program coordinator; Paige Griffin, certified yoga instructor; and a speaker on pool therapy
  • July 22: Nutritious & Delicious: Eating Well on a Budget, with Lori Biamonte, University of Vermont Extension Service nutritionist and educator. The discussion includes preparation of a healthy snack.
  • July 29, 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Developing Positive Coping Skills for a Stressful World, featuring Dr. Craig Knapp, who will present on stress reduction techniques and Kathleen White, M.Ed., LCMHC, who will provide an overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
  • Aug. 5: Keeping Yourself Safe in Emergency Situations/Disaster Preparedness, featuring Chief Robert Schlachter Jr., Rutland City Fire Department and George Sykes from the American Red Cross
  • Aug. 12, Personal Empowerment Through Self-Advocacy, featuring Vermont Center for Independent Living staff Denise Bailey, direct services coordinator, and Jessica Butterfield and Glenn Reed, peer advocate counselors.
  • Aug. 19: The Daily Benefits of Transcendental Meditation, will feature D. Edwards Smith, M.D., transcendental meditation teacher. The session will be followed by a series recap/discussion, refreshments and socializing.

Pre-registration is recommended. Participants are encouraged to attend the entire series.
