Nick Daniloff, newly retired Northeastern University professor and resident of Andover, will return to Misty Valley Books, on the Green in Chester, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8 and July 15 for the second and third of his four-part series on the New Cold War.

On July 8, he will talk about the nature of Soviet-U.S. tensions during the Cold War and the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

On July 15, he will talk this time about espionage, then and now.
Daniloff has been professor of journalism at Northeastern for the last 25 years. Prior to that, he spent his journalism career covering the Cold War from Washington and Moscow.

In 1986, at the end of his assignment for U.S. News & World Report, he was arrested by the KGB, in response to the arrest by the FBI of a Soviet physicist in New York, and accused of spying.
The lecture/discussion is free and open to the public, although a free will offering will support the bookstore’s programs.

Bread and Puppet Farm, located at Route 122 in Glover, is presenting a series of shows and museum tours during July including the Nothing-Is-Not-Ready circus and pageant.

  • Friday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. Nothing-Is-Not-Ready Show

The Nothing-Is-Not-Ready Shows are about the political and apolitical movement of the not-yet-existing up-riser masses against the economy.
Suggested donations $10 but no one will be turned away.

  • Saturday. July 12 at 2 p.m. Community Circus Rehearsal

All ages are welcome. You are invited to join a circus rehearsal on Saturday to be performed the following Sunday.

  • Sunday, July 13 at 2 p.m. Nothing is Not Ready Circus and Pageant

B+P invites the audience to participate in the circus and pageant. A guest performance by Modern Times Theater and a Woodshed Gallery reception for artist Helen Rabin will follow the pageant. Museum tour begins at 1 p.m. and the slideshows at 2 p.m. The circus starts at 3 p.m. with the Modern Times Theater and Woodshed Gallery reception to follow. Suggested donations $10. No one will be turned away.

  • Tuesday July 15 at 7:30 p.m. Shape Note Sing at Bread and Puppet

Early American four-part hymns in the Fa-Sol-La-Mi tradition performed at 7:30 p.m. on every Tuesday evening through August. All welcome, no experience necessary. At the Paper Mache Cathedral on Bread and Puppet Farm. Admission is free.

July 12: FOLA celebrates  with ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’

To celebrate the Fourth of July, Friends of the Ludlow Auditorium will offer the Oscar-winning performance of James Cagney in “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” the 1942 film that chronicled the life of George M. Cohan, which will begin at 7 p.m. July 12 at the Town Hall Auditorium located at 37 Depot St., in Ludlow.  The movie is free and open to everyone; donations are appreciated. July 16: Cavendish Concert on the Green hosts Redington

Rick Redington rocks CCCA concert series.

The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association invites everyone to the Proctorsville Green in Proctorsville for the continuing summer music series 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16 to hear the rocking sounds of Rick Redington.

This concert will be the second in this year’s series of six concerts that are held on consecutive Wednesday nights in July and August. CCCA invites the public to enjoy a warm summer evening with neighbors and friends in front of the gazebo on the green. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a picnic or just listen to the music.

July 17: Kleeman’s blues kick off Summer Concert Series

The five-week 2014 Chester Summer Concert Series will kick off on Thursday, July 17 with the Chris Kleeman Band. Kleeman, a Chester resident, is high-energy blues guitarist who has performed with B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Koko Taylor and Johnny Winter among many others.

All performances run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and take place on the lawn of the Academy Building, across from the Green in Chester. The rain venue for each event will be the Stone Hearth Inn on Route 11 West.

  • On July 24, Stone Cold Roosters will bring its eclectic mix of honky tonk, swamp funk, old blues and rock ‘n’ roll.
  • The Starline Rhythm Boys will perform on July 31, bringing its own versions of hillbilly, rockabilly and bluegrass.
  • Four master musicians and woodworkers appear on Aug. 14. Joinery brings “its handcrafted music,” a solid knowledge of many ages and genres to its concerts.

The Chester Summer Concert Series is held through the auspices of the Rotary Club of Chester, and supported by Dakin and Benelli, P.C., Newsbank, The Chester Telegraph, TD Bank and Chester Family Medicine/SMCS.
