  • Tuesday Aug 12 at 7:30 p.m. Shape Note Sing at Bread and Puppet

Early American four-part hymns in the Fa-Sol-La-Mi tradition performed at 7:30 p.m. on every Tuesday evening through August at the Paper Mache Cathedral on Bread and Puppet Farm. All welcome, no experience necessary. Admission is free.

  • Wednesday Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. Fire, Emergency Performance for Gaza

Fire was made in 1966 and dedicated to three Americans who immolated themselves in protest of the war in Vietnam. Donations welcomed. Performed at Plainfield Opera House, 1118 Maple Hill Road, Plainfield, Vt. by Jade Walker & Sarah Lowry. For more information: events@plainfieldvt.us 802-454-1117

  • Saturday Aug. 16 at 8:30 p.m. Bread and Puppet Archival Film Viewing

Joinery winds up the summer concert season in Chester

Aug. 14: Joinery wraps up Chester Summer Concert Series

On Thursday, Aug. 14 from 6:30-8 p.m., Chester’s Summer Concert Series welcomes Joinery, a group of four Vermonters from the West River Valley, for the last concert of the summer. TDBank sponsors this performance.

Joinery is four Vermont musicians who have come together to play and share their unique style of Americana. Joinery’s members are: Colin Blazej on upright bass and vocals; Chuck Davison on acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, and vocals; Andy Foster on lap steel and resonator guitar; and John Pozzi on guitar and vocals. In addition they enlisted some friends to fill out the sound including Tony Leone on drums and Grammy award winning cellist Eugene Friesen.

Bring blankets and lawn chairs and sit back and listen to music on a summer night in downtown Chester. In case of inclement weather, concerts will move to The Stone Hearth Inn on Route 11 West. All concerts are free. For more information contact 802-875-3400.

Aug. 16:  Silent Movie Fest returns to Ludlow Auditorium

Friends of Ludlow Auditorium’s annual Silent Movie Festival will be held on 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium, 37 S. Depot St., Ludlow. The festival will present the classic work of Charlie Chaplin in City Lights with a short by comedian Buster Keaton. 

Glenn Brown will be featured at the auditorium’s piano for the Buster Keaton short. City Lights is a 1931 American romantic comedy film written by, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin. The story follows the misadventures of Chaplin’s Tramp as he falls in love with a blind girl  and develops a turbulent friendship with an alcoholic millionaire . The movie is free and open to the public, though donations to underwrite the cost of the movie are appreciated. Berkshire Bank will provide popcorn and FOLA will provide water. WineAug. 22: Wine-pairing dinner at Fullerton Inn

The Fullerton Inn, 40 the Common in Chester, is holding its 14th Celebrating Wine-Pairing Dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, focusing on barbeque-themed foods. Chef James and Chef Rene will create nine dishes and staff will select wines pair with each. The event will be held on the inn’s large deck weather permitting.
The pairings will be presented in groups of three while host and Fullerton Inn owner Bret Rugg discusses food and wine pairings and the food industry. A wine distributor may give an in-depth explanation of the wines presented. Reservations are required. Seats are $50 per person and are available by calling the Fullerton Inn toll-free at 866-884-8578 or locally at 802-875-2444.

Aug. 23: Learn how to fix a bike flat in Bellows Falls

The Rockingham Free Public Library is partnering with the Bellows Falls Community Bike Project to present two free hands-on workshops on how to fix a bike flat, Saturday, Aug. 23 at the library at 65 Westminster St., in Bellows Falls. The first workshop will begin at 11 a.m. and the second will begin at noon; spots for both workshops are limited so sign-ups are required. Bonnie Anderson from the BF Bike Project will lead the demonstration.

Aug. 23: Living Roominators at Pleasant Valley Brewing

The Living Roominators will bring their “living room” rock-blues-funk-soul music to Pleasant Valley Brewing, 16 Main St. in Saxtons River from 8 to 10:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23. The band consists of Mark Grieco on acoustic guitar and vocals, Howard Weiss-Tisman on electric guitar, Eric Rhomberg on bass and vocals, and Johnny Yuma on drums. No cover.

Aug. 26:  CAFC Election Day Bake Sale

The next Chester-Andover Family Center Election Day Bake Sale is Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Chester Town Hall, on the second floor, 556 Elm St. in Chester. Pick up some delicious baked goods prepared by members of the community. The sale is open to everyone. Money raised is used to support the center’s Food Shelf and emergency financial assistance program.

Also, CAFC is looking for volunteers at the center’s Thrift Shop at 908 VT Route 103 S., Chester. An hour or two a month makes for a rewarding experience. For information, drop by the center when you are in the area to check it out.

The Thrift Shop hours are: Tuesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Wednesday, 1 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food Shelf hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Thursdays. In addition to food assistance, the center also offers emergency assistance with rent, heating fuel and utility bills.
