Jan. 20: Yagna Inn’s Indian Cooking series continues

In keeping with Yagna’s mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding, Yagna Inn launched its first series of cooking classes bringing flavors, fragrances and food for thought from different cultures in early January.

Yagna Inn, located at 61 Williams Road, Rockingham, is finishing up its series with a class on Fusion Indian Cooking and one on Festive Food. The Inn is the first in the area to offer Indian cooking classes featuring northern Indian cuisine.

Each class is designed to explore different genres: from everyday cooking to cuisine that developed in the royal courts of northern India to contemporary Indian cooking as well as meals you can make for your kid’s lunchbox or to entertain. All classes are vegetarian and can be adapted to be prepared vegan, gluten-free or some even with meat. Greenfield, Mass., Chef Madan Rathore teaches the classes.

The remaining classes are as follows:
Class III: Fusion Indian Cooking
Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 5–7 p.m.
Beginner Level (Fee: $50 + Meal: $25)

Class IV: Festive Foods
Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 5–7 p.m.
Intermediate Level (Fee: $80 + Meal: $30)

Jan. 21: Medicare Boot Camp at Springfield Hospital

Senior Solutions staff will be at the Meeting House at Springfield Hospital, 25 Ridgewood Road from 1–3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21 to provide an overview of the Medicare system. The class will be offered again on the afternoon of Wednesday, Feb. 18. Registration is suggested, as space is limited.

Medicare Boot Camp is appropriate for anyone currently enrolled in Medicare, as well as those who will sign up in the near future. Family members and caregivers may find this class useful.

Medicare has strict enrollment periods, and this session will help participants make timely decisions about drug plans and supplemental plans as well as many other issues. There is no fee, but donations are appreciated. Jan. 22: ‘Recycling Suffering’ screened at Putney Public Library

The Putney Public Library, in partnership with Mountains and Rivers Mindfulness Community, invites you to a film screening and discussion on Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s Plum Village Dharma talk “Recycling Suffering Into Happiness” on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at library located at 55 Main St. in Putney.

Richard Brady, Dharma teacher, and El Dearborn, Order of Interbeing member, will lead a discussion after the screening. This event is free and open to the public.

Thich Nhat Hanh is a global spiritual leader, poet and peace activist, revered throughout the world for his powerful teachings and bestselling writings on mindfulness and peace. His key teaching is that, through mindfulness, we can learn to live happily in the present moment — the only way to truly develop peace, both in one’s self and in the world.

Jan. 23:‘Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie’ at Weston library

Wilder Memorial Library, at 24 Lawrence Hill Road in Weston, will be offering screenings of all six parts of “Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie” throughout 2015. “Freedom & Unity” is a six-part  documentary produced by several dozen Vermont-based filmmakers. Using cinema verite, personal stories, rare footage, compelling interviews and original re-enactments they explore the history and contemporary culture of the Green Mountain State.

The screening of Part One: “A Very New Idea,” which will be followed by a discussion, is scheduled from 6:30–8:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23 at the library. It covers early settlement, native people’s resistance, the little-known history of African-American settlers and the struggle for independence lead by Ethan Allen, through Vermont’s heroic role in the Civil War.

Elayne Clift to offer workshop on writing your life stories

Jan. 24: Change of date for writing workshop at Rockingham Library

Elayne Clift’s writers’ workshop “Life Stories: Memories of Love, Action and Thought” at the Rockingham Free Public Library has been re-scheduled for 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Through prompts and facilitated exercises, award-winning author Elayne Clift will guide participants as they write and share stories. Attendees should come prepared to compose, share, laugh and discover their inner writer. Brown-bag lunches and laptops are welcome. This workshop is free and open to the public, however space is limited, so registration is recommended. Jan. 24: Santa Croce performing at Pizza Stone

Santa Croce, a young sibling band from the Keene area, will be performing Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Pizza Stone Restaurant, 291 Pleasant St. in Chester. The Santa Croce band is family entertainment with vocal harmonies from Crosby, Stills and Nash to Mumford and Sons. Jan. 25: Singers sought for children’s community choir in Chester

The First Unitarian Church is organizing a children’s choir to be directed by the church’s music director Lisa Crocker. Recommended ages are 5–13 years old. Beginning Sunday, Jan. 25, the group will meet three Sundays per month after church from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. at the church 211 North St. in Chester.

They will sing songs of peace, justice, love and the Earth, with a multicultural perspective. The idea will be to build a love of music and the ability to express one’s self through our music. The choir will occasionally perform for the congregation and sing with the adult choir at least once in the early spring.

The choir is open to all children. It is not necessary to be a church attendee to join. There is no cost for membership. If you know of a child who would like to sing in the choir, email Lisa Crocker at lisasmusicgarden@comcast.net.
