Pinske to unveil twig and resin countertop at open house

Artist Barre Pinske invites the public to view his latest commission, a twig and resin countertop at an open house from 2 to 8 p.m., on Saturday, June 13 at his studio located at 50 First St. in Chester. The piece is a custom-designed kitchen center island consisting of an assemblage of sliced tree branch pieces, cast spalted maple tiles, custom wooden cut outs of objects including stars and hearts, with a large spalted maple sun as a center piece.

The countertop itself was created in an upper floor studio that is only accessible by stairs but a slide show of the process will be shown on the lower level gallery, which is handicapped accessible. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

There will be a demonstration of Pinske’s 20-ton, 3-axis CNC milling machine acquired in part with an economic development loan from the town of Chester. People will be able to see the machine creating rough outs of Pinske’s art work. Pinske hopes that by implementing manufacturing processes to his wooden bear company he will be able to expand to a light industrial level, creating stable, good paying jobs. He intends to have machines do the rough outs and artists do the detail, ensuring a handmade look.

Visitors may also view the works of other artists on exhibit in the gallery. Exhibited pieces include glass paper weights and vibrant drinking glasses blown by Joe Nicholson, high design sculptures with a flair toward modernism by Joseph Lupiani and rustic chainsaw carvings by Rich Koons. Items on display are available for purchase.

June 13: Jam with  Junkman in June

In collaboration with the Southern Vermont Arts Center, the Junkman  will hold three free Junkjams  from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, June 13, 20, and 27 at the Factory Point Town Green, on Depot Street, across from the Polo outlet in Manchester. Grammy nominated percussionist and composer Don Knaack, better know as The Junkman uses recycled materials as his musical medium.

Open to all regardless of age or musical experience, the Junkjams are similar to drum circles but utilize recycled materials instead of drums.

Sticks and recycled materials will be provided, but The Junkman urges those attending to BYOJ: Bring Your Own Junk. No glass objects but any other material will work fine. The “instrument” should be small enough to hold with one hand while you strike it with the other to produce a good yet interesting sound. Bring a lunch, jam for a long- or short-time, and enjoy playing with a world-class percussionist before his major summer engagements begin.
