Jan 18: Martin Luther King Jr. Day program

The First Universalist Parish of Chester at 211 North St. in the Stone Village welcomes the public to a celebration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 18.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a potluck supper, the intergenerational program will include quotes, story, an art activity, and song to draw inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s views on being of service.

There will be a chance to share some of your experiences of being of service to others. The church is handicap accessible. For further information, call Steve Crofter at 802-275-4646.

Jan. 21: Typhoid Mary book discussion at Rock Library

On Thursday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m., join a book discussion of “Typhoid Mary: Captive to the Public’s Health” by Judith Walzer Leavitt at the Rockingham Library, 63 Westminster St., Bellows Falls.

Mary Mallon, also known as Typhoid Mary, was held captive for years because of her status as a healthy carrier of typhoid fever. During the gathering, Public Health Nurse William Fritch will share his reflections on the Mallon’s treatment and answer questions pertinent to today’s public health concerns. Pick up a copy of the book at the library’s front desk.

Jan. 22: Andover Folks return to Chester

Andover Folks return to Grounded for Life for an evening of contemporary Christian music. The program is free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and music begins at 7 p.m. in the coffee house down stairs at the First Baptist Church at 162 Main St., Chester.

Jan 25: 9-week program introduces kids to Asian cultures

Revels Kids engages children ages 6–14 in an exploration of diverse world cultures through music, dance, percussion, and storytelling.

Beginning Jan. 25 and running April 3 the group offers a nine-week a once a week class as part of their Revels Kids: Journeys Along the Silk Road program. The classes meet 4–5:30 p.m. at various locations throughout the Upper Valley. Under the guidance of experienced teachers, children meet for an hour and a half each week to move their bodies to world rhythms and join their voices in harmony.

The program includes a Community Cultural Exchange, Immersion Day and culminates in a Day of Sharing for parents and friends. This year, Revels Kids will be taking a trip through the arts and culture of China, Tibet, northern India and the Middle East. The tuition is $185 per child which includes the nine-week after-school program, Immersion Day, Final Sharing and a T-shirt; additional siblings $150.

Those who can’t commit to the 9-week Revels Kids program can still participate. An Immersion Day will be offered Saturday, Jan. 30 as a celebration open to all aged 3 years to adult. The cost to take part in this half-day event is $30. It will take place at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, 40 College St. in Hanover N.H.
