Jan. 27: Northern Stage premieres ‘Mad Love’

Written by local playwright Marisa Smith, “Mad Love” premieres Wednesday, Jan. 27 at the Northern Stage’s Barrette Center for the Arts, 74 Gates St. in White River Junction. It runs through Feb. 13.

The four-person play is directed by Maggie Burrows. Northern Stage artistic director Carol Dunne describes the story as “a timely look at growing up in the age of hookups and love in the age of cynicism.” Performances are Tuesdays through Sundays. “Mad Love” is recommended for ages 13 and up. A complimentary post-show reception with the cast follows the opening night performance on Saturday, Jan. 30. Optional 20-minute post-show conversations with the cast and artistic team follow performances Feb. 2–12.

As part of Athena Lecture series, a companion event “Writing is Re-Writing” led by Marisa Smith and her agent, Peregrine Whittlesley, will be held at the Barrette Center on Sunday, Jan. 31, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This conversation is free and open to the public.

Discounted tickets are available for preview performances Jan. 27–29. $15 Anytime Student tickets are available for any performance, and regular adult ticket prices range from $30 to $55.

Stone Church Arts presents multi-instrumentalist Ian Ethan Case, best known for his innovative approach to the 18-string acoustic double-neck guitar.

World-class percussionist Bertram Lehmann will join Case at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29 in the Chapel at Immanuel Episcopal Church, 20 Church St., in Bellows Falls.

Tickets are $17 for adults; $13 for seniors in advance, and $20; $15 at the door. Jan. 30: Misty Valley Books’ New Voices 2016 at Chester’s Stone Church

Misty Valley Books’ annual New Voices event takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the First Universalist Church, 211 North St. in Chester’s Stone Village. The 22nd anniversary New Voices will present five promising debut authors to talk about their works.

This year’s authors include John Bragg, The Broom of God, a Novel of Patagonia, a murder mystery in the landscape of southern Chile; And West is West by Ron Childress, a terrifyingly real scenario involving drones and Wall St. algorithms; C.W. Huntington Jr.’s Maya, a story of India and the unraveling of identity; Jennifer Tseng’s Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness, the story of a librarian with fantasies that come true; and Ed Tarkington’s Only Love Can Break Your Heart, a portrait of a town in the South, family fealty and murder.

The public is invited to cross-country ski at Grafton Ponds* on Saturday morning with the authors, attend a wine and cheese reception, and dine at the Fullerton Inn** with the authors after the readings in the afternoon. Seating at the readings is limited; tickets cost $10 and are available at the bookstore.

This year’s New Voices is dedicated to the memory of Chester’s Carrol Ann Rodney Otto, a lover of books. Chester’s Inn Victoria, Hugging Bear Inn and Motel in the Meadow are offering lodging packages for the event, involving a special rate, books and tickets to the event.

Jan. 30: 2016 Northern Roots Festival

The Brattleboro Music Center presents the 2016 edition of the Northern Roots Festival, a day-long event that brings together the an array of traditional music spotlighting Irish, Scottish, Scandinavian and French Canadian music.

The annual event is Saturday, Jan. 30, combining workshops, jam sessions and evening concert. Events are scheduled from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the New England Youth Theater, 100 Flat St. in Brattleboro, with some afternoon sessions at McNeill’s Brewery. An evening concert featuring the best of Northern Musical Traditions will be presented at 7:30 p.m.

At 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, Vermont-band Atlantic Crossing will bring its traditional songs and acoustic instrumental music to Proctorsville’s Raise the Roof Concert Series at Gethsemane Church on Depot St. in Proctorsville. Take the Route 103 detour into downtown Proctorsville to get to Depot Street. Admission is $10 at the door.

Sunday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m., the Brattleboro Music Center welcomes the return of the award-winning Heath Quartet, as part of the BMC Chamber Music Series at Centre Congregational Church on 193 Main St. in Brattleboro.

The young British string quartet performance will feature String Quartet in F minor, Op. 20, No. 5 by Franz Joseph Haydn; String Quartet in F major, Op. 135 by Ludwig van Beethoven; and String Quartet No. 3 in E flat minor, Op. 30 by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky.
