March 4: Main Street Arts’ production of ‘Bat Boy: the Musical’

Bat Boy: the Musical, a mix of slapstick surrealism and camp horror with elements of hillbilly rock and post-modern Broadway in its score, opens at 7:30 p.m., Friday March 4 at 35 Main St. in Saxtons River.

The musical’s take on contemporary violence and prejudice is far from subtle. It is not suitable for children or the easily offended.

The show is based on a long-running series of articles published in 1992 along with other mostly fictional tabloid news by Weekly World News. The articles followed the unlikely adventures of Bat Boy, a half-bat half human hybrid who was trying to make his way in America’s heartland.

After the WWN publishers closed shop, writers Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming and American composer/lyricist Laurence O’Keefe asked themselves, what would be the consequences if their odd bat boy fable was true? What if something that strange actually occurred in America’s increasingly intolerant heartland?

Other show times are at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5; Thursday, March 10; Friday, March 11; and Saturday, March 12; and 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday, March 5; Sunday, March 6; and Sunday, March 13.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 at the door, and are being sold at Village Square Booksellers on the Square in Bellows Falls, Misty Valley Books on the Green in Chester, and at Main Street Arts. They are available online at mainstreetarts.org and by calling the MSA at 802-869-2960.

March 5: 10 piece jazz band plays Claremont

Gerry Grimo and East Bay Jazz 10-piece band swing into the Claremont Opera House on Saturday, March 5, 7:30 p.m. at 58 Opera House Square in Claremont, N.H. to chase away those blues with a winter concert of big band standards, blues, rhythm and blues and jazz. Tickets are $5, will be available the night of the show or in advance in person at COH or by calling 603-542-4433.
