March 2:  Dr. Seuss’ birthday celebrated at Wilder Library

Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat will make an appearance at Story Hour to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday from 10:30–11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2 Wilder Memorial Library, 24 Lawrence Hill Road, Weston. There will be Dr. Seuss stories and activities for children and families.

March 4: Joyful Noyes at Grounded4Life

The Joyful Noyes, a mother/daughter duo, bring their musical message of salvation and encouragement to those in need,  to Grounded4Life, at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 4.

Grounded4ife is a coffeehouse located in the lower level of the Chester Baptist Church, 162 Main St., in Chester. The performance is free to all.

March 5: Guided snowshoe hike in Bellows Falls forest

On Saturday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to noon, state forester and Saxtons River resident Tim Morton will lead a free snowshoe hike through the Bellows Falls Watershed forest. Bring you own snowshoes and dress for the weather. Registration is required.

The terrain at the Bellows Falls Watershed forest is rugged. This hike is designed for people with moderate skill and fitness. The route travels through managed forests that feature interesting terrain, large impressive white pine trees, a deer wintering area and some uncommon trees and natural areas. Snowshoes should be well cleated or have built-in crampons. If there is limited snow, the event will shift to a winter walk with micro-spikes required.

March 5: LUV eBook and Audio eBook refresher course

Learn how to listen to audio eBooks or read them on your computer, tablets, pads and smart phones. At 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, Virgil Fuller will visit the Wilder Memorial Library at 24 Lawrence Hill Road in Weston to teach how to navigate the Listen up Vermont! website. The program is free to all Vermont residents but registration is required. Sign up by emailing director@wildermemoriallibrary.org.

March 5: 8th Annual Maple Fest Dinner

The 8th annual Maple Fest Dinner is at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, in Willard Hall at St. Luke’s Church at 162 Main St. in Chester. Attendees will sit down to a meal with a hint of maple in each dish. Along with a full meal and beverage, a variety of desserts will be offered.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for people to view an assortment of raffle items and purchase tickets. Tickets cost $1 each or 6 for $5. Winners will be drawn following the dinner.

Cost for the dinner is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Seating is limited. Make reservations by calling 802-875-3531. All proceeds will benefit PINS, Partners in Service.

March 6: Baker and cancer survivor discusses new book

John McLure, well-known baker and proprietor of Baba À Louis in Chester, is a 14-year survivor of cancer and now author of A Cancer Treatment that describes his alternative path to wellness. He will be at Misty Valley Books on the Green at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.

McLure, whose bakery has been a local institution for many years, is also author of Baba À Louis Bakery Bread Book, The Secret Book of the Bread.

The event at Misty Valley Books is free and open to the public, and a reception will follow McLure’s remarks.

March 9: BRGNS celebrates five years

The staff and volunteers at Black River Good Neighbor Services invite the public to join them at the BRGNS Thrift Store anytime after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9 to celebrate BRGNS’ fifth anniversary at the Ludlow Community Center, 37B Main St. in Ludlow. The store will be open for its normal hours 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

There will be refreshments and activities for all, including kids, plus hourly events, scavenger hunts, door prizes, special sales and tours of the food shelf.

As a non-profit community organization, BRGNS provides confidential, temporary food, clothing and financial assistance to those in need, to help them return to self-sufficiency. They are always in need of volunteers. If you have a few hours to share, call Audrey at 802-228-3663.

March 9: Local diver shares recent petroglyph find

At 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9 master diver Annette Spaulding will discuss her recent petroglyph discovery along the Connecticut River at the Rockingham Library at 65 Westminster St. in Bellows Falls. This is one of two petroglyph sites known to have been submerged under water after the creation of the Vernon Dam over 100 years ago. Spaulding is the first to locate one of the two petroglyph sites.

March 9 & 10: Misty Valley Books offers Italian classes

Beginning March 9 and 10, Misty Valley Books, on the Green in Chester, offers two levels of Italian language and culture classes.

Beginning Italian is an introduction to basic grammar and conversational Italian for travel, as well as a sampling of Italian culture and geography from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9. It will incorporate music, film and Internet resources. The course runs six consecutive Wednesdays beginning March 9.

On Thursday, March 10, Intermediate Italian will run from 7–8:30 p.m. and continue six consecutive Thursdays. The course will provide opportunities to enhance conversational skills, build vocabulary, and hone grammar primarily through Italian film.

All classes will be held at the bookstore. The fee is $100 for six sessions. For more information call Misty Valley Books at 802-875-3400.
