The Village at Cedar Hill Speakers Series presents opportunities to learn about chronic diseases that inflict the elderly.

From 2 to 3 p.m., Thursday, April 7 at Village At Cedar Hill, Diane Sherman, Ph.D., coordinator at the Parkinson’s Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, presents a free seminar titled Parkinson’s Disease … Beyond the Best-Known Symptoms.

The event takes place at 92 Cedar Hill Drive in Windsor.

Attendees will learn about little-known symptoms of the chronic illness, strategies for dealing with them, and the resources available through the Parkinson’s Center. Following the presentation there will be time for questions or comments.

The Village at Cedar Hill Speaker Series will continue throughout 2016, with presentations on  Nutrition & Wellness ,  What you Need to Know about Assisted Living and  Estate Planning. Learn more from its website.

April 7: Prom shopping at Chester-Andover Family Center

The Chester-Andover Family Center is hosting a community service event for area teens to find their perfect prom outfit.

From 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, the CAFC opens its doors for prom shopping.  The center has a large selection of prom wear for girls and guys in new and in like-new condition. It willl also have accessories including shoes, shirts, ties, handbags and jewelry. Teen shoppers can enter a free raffle for prom flowers.

April 8: Free diabetes education in Springfield

Springfield Medical Care Systems offers a free four-week program  Learning to Live Well with Diabetes.

This educational series is an opportunity for individuals newly diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes who want to learn successful strategies to manage their health.

Classes will be held on Fridays, April 8, 15, 22, and 29, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at Springfield Health Center, 100 River St. in Springfield. A second series of classes will be held on Wednesdays, May 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the same location. April 8: New England Baptist College Band at Chester coffeehouse

Grounded4Life is bringing in a band from Northeastern Baptist College to perform on Friday, April 8.

The band represents the school, but is also independent and has performed in Vermont, New York and New Hampshire.  The program begins at 7 p.m. with free admission.

The event will be held at Grounded4Life, a coffeehouse in the lower level of the Chester Baptist Church, 162 Main St. in Chester. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with food, coffee, fellowship and conversation.

April 9: Rock Library’s Spring Book Sale begins

booksale16smallThe Rockingham Free Public Library hosts its annual book sale during library hours on Saturday, April 9 through Saturday, April 30 at 65 Westminster St., Bellows Falls.

A Preview Night at 5:30–8 p.m. on Friday, April 8 is open to members of Friends of the Library. Join the Friends to get early access to the library book sale. Dues are $10. Applications can be found at the library’s front desk or by visiting rockinghamlibrary.org/fol.html.

Memberships will also be available at the door on Preview Night.

The library is still accepting donations for the sale. DVDs, audiobooks and books of all kinds are welcome, with the exception of encyclopedias, textbooks and musty books. Donations can be made during library hours.

April 9: Bellows Falls Bike Project hosts fund-raiser

The Bellows Falls Community Bike Project hosts a Silent Auction Fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 at 33 Bridge St. in Bellows Falls.

Items available for bids include restored bicycles (vintage to nearly new), gift certificates for local businesses, local artisan wares and gift baskets. Come for light food, cash bar and a 50/50 raffle. There will be live music by local musicians Don Dawson, Jesse Peters and The Milkhouse Heaters.

The BF Community Bike Project is a volunteer run nonprofit bicycle shop. Their mission is to provide community access to bicycles and bike repair skills, encouraging safe bicycling as a means of affordable transportation, self-sufficiency, and overall wellness.

April 10: National Library Week celebrated at Whiting Library

Whiting Library at 117 Main St. in Chester joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating the dynamic changes that are happening in today’s libraries. April 10 through 16 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Whiting Library is celebrating all week with raffles, refreshments and drop-in crafts for children. For a schedule of events, visit the library’s Web site at whitinglibrary.org.

Whiting Library is transforming and offering monthly opportunities for children to read to a therapy dog, weekly story-time for toddlers and a chance for people of all ages to learn to knit, collage, felt, discuss books, or see a film. There are kits to take home to learn a craft, study minerals, bugs or shells, make candy or bake a cake. Borrow a telescope or garden tools and share your plans with interested staff that share your interests and hobbies.
