Epic Season rocks Chester coffeehouse

May 13: Epic Season returns to Grounded

Nathan and Simon Wells and Matthew Crory of Epic Season bring an orchestra with vocals, guitar, keyboard, drums, cello and bass onto one stage at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 13.

The event will be held at Grounded4Life, a coffee house in the lower level of the Chester Baptist Church, 162 Main St. in Chester. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with food, coffee, fellowship and conversation. Free admission.

May 14: Hazardous Waste Days

The Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District is sponsoring two free events in May for the collection and safe disposal of household hazardous wastes.

The dates and times are:

  • 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 at the Springfield Transfer Station, 135 Fairground Road; and
  • 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on on Saturday, May 21 at the former Goodyear Building in Windsor.

Bring in mercury fever thermometers and receive new digital fever thermometers.

Residents and businesses from Andover, Athens, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Ludlow, Plymouth, Reading, Rockingham, Springfield, Weathersfield, West Windsor and Windsor may participate. No pre-registration for residents. Businesses must pre-register and will be charged for disposal costs. May 14: Chester Conservation Committee leads hikes

Join the Chester Conservation Committee in May for two guided hikes.

The first is a Green Mountain Nature Trail Hike, which takes place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. The Green Mountain Nature Trail is a 1.8-mile loop trail that traverses the 160-acre forest adjacent to Green Mountain Union High School. The trail offers a moderate hike that winds and climbs through evergreen and hardwood forests. Interested hikers should meet in the parking lot behind GMUHS at 716 Vermont Route 103 in Chester near the soccer field and running track between 8:45 and 9 a.m.

The second hike is a Lost Mine Trail Hike on Sunday, May 22 at 9 a.m. The Lost Mine Trail is a 2.2-mile loop that traverses a large section of Chester’s Town Forest near the reservoir. The level of difficulty is moderate; it is more challenging than the Green Mountain Nature Trail.

Hikers should meet at the trailhead on Water Farm Road. From the Chester town center, follow Route 11 West, after passing Motel in the Meadow take the next right onto Balch Road. Go .8 of a mile and bear right at the fork onto Water Farm Road. Proceed past the reservoir on left and up the road to the clearly marked trailhead. Parking is limited to the shoulder. Carpool if possible.

The group advises all hikers to dress appropriately and bring water and snacks. For more information, contact Gary King at 802-875-5153.

May 14: Donate food items to Postal Service on Stamp out Hunger Day

Helping your local food shelf by leaving a bag of nonperishable food by your mailbox for your postal carrier to pick up on Saturday, May 14.

Suggestions for donations include: canned fruit in juice; hearty, meaty soups; canned meat; and peanut butter. Also needed: reduced-sodium, sugar-free and gluten-free products.

The number of Chester-Andover Family Center Food Shelf recipients increases weekly and, therefore, the need for donations also increases. The food collected during the Stamp Out Hunger food drives has been extremely helpful in filling the food shelves.

May 14: Village at Cedar Hill hosts Craft Fair

craftFairWThe Village at Cedar Hill invites the public to come celebrate Spring from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their 4th Bi-Annual Craft Fair, with hand-made crafts, food and music at 92 Cedar Hill Drive in Windsor. The event will take place rain or shine.

May 16: Chester Seniors Citizens Club hosts luncheon

Join the Chester Senior Citizens Club for its monthly luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 16, at the Chester Congregational Church at 426 Main St. Charlestown Senior Center’s Silver Country will perform. Bring a friend, a place setting, and if possible, a dish to share. For rides, call Georgia 802-875-6242.

May 16: Local poet John Woods reads his work

On Monday, May 16 at 7 p.m., prizewinning poet John Woods will read a selection of his work at the Rockingham Free Public Library, 65 Westminster St. in Bellows Falls. This event is free and open to the public.

June 3 : Chester Alumni hold Gathering of Friends and Classmates Event

Chester’s American Legion Unit No. 67 hosts a two-day Gathering of Friends and Classmates event on the first weekend in June for the Green Mountain Union High School’s alumni.

The event kicks off with an Alumni Social on Friday evening, June 3 at the Chester American Legion on Route 103 South across from Green Mountain High School. Contact the Alumni Association at chsgmuhsalumni.org/contact.php for Friday’s schedule.

On Saturday, June 4, a parade takes place from Elm Street up Main Street to Cobleigh Field, on Cobleigh St. Parade line up is 10 a.m. at Elm Street and step off is 11 a.m. There is still time to enter to march in the parade. This year’s theme is OPEN. To enter, contact Jon Clark 802-353-6043.

A Barbeque Banquet will be held at the Chester American Legion Field immediately following the parade. Parade winners will be announced at the BBQ. Admission Meal is $10/per person payable on the day of the event. Children age 12 and under eat for are free.

The Alumni Annual Meeting will be held at 3 p.m. inside the Chester American Legion. Alumni member dues are $10. Dues, as well as a donation to the Scholarship Fund; 50/50 Raffle Tickets ($5 a ticket); and any other donations may be sent to: CHS/GMUHS Alumni Association, P.O. Box 882, Chester, VT. 05143.
