Stone Church Arts hosts conductor Jacob Rouven and the New England Mandolin Ensemble

July 10: Stone Church Arts presents mandolin concert

Stone Church Arts presents the New England Mandolin Ensemble and participants in the seventh Festival of Mandolin Chamber Music with special guest conductor, Jacob Rouven from Israel, in concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 10 at The Chapel, Immanuel Episcopal Church, 20 Church St., Bellows Falls.

Founded by August Watters, a Boston area teacher and composer, the Festival of Mandolin Chamber Music is designed for the classical mandolin community and for concert-goers interested in classical chamber music. Participants rehearse in preparation for the concert, which is the finale of the workshop.

Since the chapel only holds 50 people, tickets are limited. Tickets are $17 for adults, $13 for seniors and children under 12 in advance and $20 or $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available online at www.stonechurcharts.org or by phone at 802-460-0110. They are also on sale at Village Square Booksellers on the Square in Bellows Falls.

‘Peter and John’ screening at Weston Playhouse

July 10: Director Jay Craven screens new film

Jay Craven’s new seaside film drama,  Peter and John, will play at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, July 10 the Weston Playhouse, 12 Park St. in Weston.  Craven will introduce the film and lead a Q&A afterward.

Recently nominated for a New England Emmy, Peter and John marks Craven’s eighth narrative film based in New England.

It is based on the 19th century novel by Guy de Maupassant that takes place after the decline of whaling, before the rise of tourism, and in the New England shadow of the Civil War. The film tells the story of two brothers whose relationship strains when the younger one receives news of an unexpected inheritance—and both brothers become attracted to the same young woman who arrives on their island.

The film was shot on Nantucket in the spring of 2014 and was produced through the Movies From Marlboro program, a biennial film intensive semester jointly produced by Marlboro College and Kingdom County Productions. For this ambitious production, filmmaking professionals mentored and collaborated with students from 12 colleges (Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, Boston College, University of Vermont, Lyndon State College, Dartmouth, Smith, Sarah Lawrence, Emerson, Antioch, London School of the Arts, and Marlboro).
