Aug 4: EdgarMay’s Open Play August special

EdgarMay Health and Rec Center offers an August Bring a Friend Free special from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays, Aug. 4, 11,18 and 25 at Studio Momentum 71 Main St. in Springfield.

Open Play is designed for children ages 6 months through 5 years and their caregivers. It’s included as part of a family membership. Non-members can purchase a 10-visit punch card for $70, normally $10 per family Drop-In fee.

These parent-child oriented activities are part of the EdgarMay’s mission to provide area residents of all ages with opportunities and resources necessary to live an active and healthy lifestyle in a safe, clean, and supportive environment. The program is planning to add a Saturday Open Play in the fall.

Aug. 5: Evelyn Cormier returns
to Grounded4Life

Enjoy an evening of music with Into the Deep, featuring Evelyn Cormier at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5 at Grounded4Life, a coffee house on the lower level of the Chester Baptist Church, 162 Main St. in Chester. Cormier has been featured at Grounded4Life in the past; her faith-inspired music benefits from her rich voice and expressive lyrics.

The free event is free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with food, coffee, fellowship and conversation.

Aug. 6: St. Luke’s hosts 78th Annual Supper

The 78th St. Luke’s Annual Supper will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6 under tents on the lawn rain or shine at 313 Main St., Chester. The Silent Auction of goods and services will be held again this year. For reservations to dine at a special time call 802-875-4031.

Aug. 6: FOLA presents ‘Ex Machina’

Ex Machina” is Friends of Ludlow Auditorium’s next film at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 37 Depot St. in Ludlow.

Rated R, “Ex Machina” is a 2015 British-American science fiction psychological thriller. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence.

Aug. 8: Yoga for kids in Andover

Lila Specker holds a fun and sociable Kids Yoga and Movement Series Mondays and Thursdays through August at the Andover Town Hall, 953 Weston Andover Town Road, Andover. Five sessions will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8, 11, 15, 22 and 25. Kids of all ages and abilities are welcome with a parent or caregiver. Specker is a registered yoga teacher and a certified adaptive yoga teacher with six years experience teaching adults and children of all abilities. Classes are drop-in and by donation. Aug. 9: SoVerA hosts celestial photography workshops

The first in the new series of SoVerA workshops begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at the Whiting Library, 117 Main St. in Chester and features a hands-on presentation on the basics of getting started in simple, celestial photography, as well as some advanced technique. Free and open to the public, this workshop includes a short review of light and how cameras work, then a series of steps in creating simple night sky images.

It’s hands-on, regardless of weather, and primarily indoor event. If the skies cooperate, attendees will be assisted in taking their very own celestial images.  Nothing is required, but attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras, tripods, cell phones and something to take notes with.
