Early Afternoon Session for Educators: Reaching and Teaching Students in Poverty: Strategies for Erasing the Opportunity Gap

12:00 – 3:00
How would our strategies for strengthening the educational success of students experiencing poverty change if we based them on deep understandings of the challenges and barriers they endure? In this workshop we will explore those challenges and barriers through discussion and interactive exercises. This will prepare us to discuss more viable, sustainable solutions to creating equitable schools for all youth, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Community Dinner 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Early Evening Session for Community Members:How to Become a Threat to Inequity in Schools and Society: The Equity Literacy Model

5:30 – 7:00pm.
One barrier to making progress on matters of equity and diversity consists of people who are hostile to the idea of this progress. But another barrier is a tendency for well-intentioned people who embrace equity and diversity to advocate for it in ways that guarantee minimal change. Equity literacy is a model that is designed to maximize the integrity of our equity efforts by strengthening our literacy related to equity. We will discuss the knowledge and skills that prepare us to create the change we want to see to improve communities, schools, and society.
