On Sunday May 19 meet at the parking area for the Stratton Mountain Trail on the Arlington – Wardsboro Rd (Kelley Stand Rd) in the town of Stratton at 10am for this easy hike of 3.6 miles round trip. This hike follows Forest Road 383 which can be found on the map https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5289737.pdf.  The hike starts across the road from the parking area for the Stratton Mountain Trail and while 99% of hikers go up the mountain, few choose this delightful hike along the Deerfield River.

The route is more trail than road and receives more attention from hunters and snowmobilers than hikers. As you travel south the river gets bigger as it adds streams and brooks. The hike ends at an opening in the woods where the Deerfield flows into Somerset Reservoir. Deer, hawks, heron, and otters have been seen on the trail – bring binoculars. The point at which the river becomes the reservoir is a good place to relax, have lunch, and enjoy the view while waiting for some wildlife to wander by. Wear boots as there are some short wet areas that are not acceptable for sneakers. Participants must register in advance. To register and for questions about this hike contact Mickey Nowak at mickey.nowak@gmail.com or 413-246-3915.
