Chester summer sports camps signups begin

Telegraph logoChester Recreation Department Director Matt McCarthy announces that the  rec department begins summer camp signups on Monday, May 9, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Chester Town Hall, 556 Elm St. in Chester. Offices are open Monday through Friday.

Below are a preview of the camps.

BASKETBALL CLINIC: TBA

BASEBALL CAMP: 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, July 5 – Friday, July 8. For ages 7 to 12. The camp will stress the fundamentals of hitting, pitching, proper throwing mechanics and fielding. Please have your child bring a snack and a drink.
Cost: $25

CHESTER REC SPORTS CAMP: 9:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, June 20 – Friday, June 24. This camp is for boys and girls ages 8 to 12. McCarthy will incorporate multiple sports like basketball, soccer, baseball and indoor hockey into a week full of fun and activity. The camp will be held at Green Mountain Union High School’s gym and outside. Please bring a snack and a drink.
Cost: $50 for the week/ $10 per day

START SMART CAMP: 11 a.m. to noon, Monday, June 27 – Thursday, June 30. This camp is for boys and girls ages 3 to 5, not in kindergarten. This camp is designed to introduce children to the FUNdamentals of a variety of sports possibly including soccer, basketball and baseball. Each day your child will play a different sport. Let your child experiment in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere. The camp will be held at Green Mountain Union High School’s cafeteria or outside.
Cost: $15

DANCE CAMP: 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 14– Friday, June 17. Boy and girls in grades 1 through 6. Come explore a variety of dance styles including modern, hip hop, jazz and choreography in this mixed level dance camp. Camp Director Ashley Hensel Browning along with volunteers will keep you moving and smiling as you learn new moves and work with friends to create your own dances. Come ready to be physical and have fun! Bring water and a snack. Let’s dance! The camp will be held at either CAES or GMUHS.
Cost: $45

ROCK CLIMBING CAMP: 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 12 – Thursday, July 14. Ages 8 and up. Allan Garvin and Allyson Oswald will be teaching the basics of indoor rock climbing at the GMUHS Cafeteria. This includes tying knots, rock climbing technique and use of equipment. Rock climbing is a great activity that develops physical and mental problem solving skills. Participants will be encouraged to challenge themselves and have fun. We will incorporate games and challenges to learn and practice the techniques. No experience is necessary. All necessary equipment will be provided.
Cost: $30

SPORTS FOR SQUIRTS: Times and dates to be determined. For boys and girls entering kindergarten through 2nd grade.  This day program is designed to introduce the fundamentals of a variety of sports possibly including soccer, basketball, baseball and football. Each day your child will play a different sport. Let your child experiment in a fun non-competitive atmosphere. All necessary equipment except for baseball glove is provided. Cost: $20

TENNIS CAMP: Times and dates to be determined. Sessions in July and August at the tennis courts on Lovers Lane.
Cost: $10 per session.

SOCCER CAMP: Monday through Friday, Aug. 15–Aug. 19. 9 to 10:30 a.m. for ages 5 to 7; 9 a.m. to noon for ages 8 to 13. Camp directors will offer instruction in soccer skills, drills and scrimmages. Participants need to bring shin guards, cleats (or sneakers if no cleats are available) and a soccer ball (we will have some soccer balls if needed). At Green Mountain Union High.
Cost: $25 for ages 5 to 7; $50 for ages 8 to 13. Includes T-shirt.

There is also free breakfast and lunch at CAES and GMUHS (7 to 8 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m.) so feel free to take advantage of these opportunities before and after some of these camps.
