To the editor: Murray backed by two governors, lieutenant gov for state Senate Windsor seat

Iam honored to have earned the endorsements of Gov. Phil Scott, Lt. Gov. John Rodgers and former Gov. Jim Douglas in my campaign for the Vermont Senate.

These three leaders have different backgrounds and perspectives, but their endorsements share an important message: Vermont needs greater political balance, fiscal responsibility and a willingness to put practical solutions ahead of partisan politics.

“Vermont needs more legislators who will actually work with me,” Gov. Scott said. “Andrea Murray will be a voice in the Legislature to lower taxes on Vermont families and businesses and to make our state more affordable. I hope you join me in supporting her this November.”

Lt. Gov. Rodgers called me “a moderate, independent-minded Vermonter who will bring that balance to the Senate.” He also said I would be “a strong advocate for affordability, tax relief and responsible state spending, while standing up for Vermont agriculture, working people, and a vibrant local food system.”

Former Gov. Douglas said, “Andrea has the experience, work ethic, and love for her community to be a highly effective senator from her first day in office.” He added, “Rural Vermont deserves to be heard — and Andrea Murray will make sure it is.”

I am deeply grateful for their confidence, but I understand that an endorsement does not entitle me to anyone’s vote. I still have to earn yours. I am running because Vermont must begin addressing the consequences of three decades of legislation shaped too often by partisan ideology instead of affordability, accountability and measurable results. We must examine our existing laws honestly, retain the policies that work, and reform or repeal those that have contributed to higher costs, restricted housing and diminished the rights of rural landowners.

For me, fiscal responsibility begins with remembering that every dollar that government spends first comes from someone who worked to earn it. Leadership means leaving partisan jabs, false accusations and divisive dog whistles behind so we can concentrate on the people who need their government to work. We must be honest about how Vermont arrived at this point and
equally honest about what it will take to move forward.

For too long, rural Vermonters have felt that decisions affecting their children’s education, homes, land, farms and livelihoods were being made without sufficient consideration of their experiences. They deserve a senator who will listen, understand the real-world consequences of legislation and bring their concerns directly into every important policy discussion.

My vision is for a Vermont where working families can live comfortably, seniors can remain in the communities they helped build, young people can find housing and meaningful careers, and farmers and landowners are treated as partners in our state’s future.

Voters face a defining crossroads this November: continue enduring the pattern of rising living costs, or elect a strong advocate for common sense, political balance and fiscally responsible government. I am asking for the opportunity to represent Windsor County, Pittsfield and Thetford in the Vermont Senate. I would be honored to earn your vote.
