CAES project to offer free food to students’ families; science for homeschoolers

The Chester-Andover Parent/Teacher group is working in conjunction with Black River Produce, Lisai’s  Chester Market, the Grateful Garden, churches and volunteers to provide free food staples throughout the summer for anyone with a child enrolled at CAES or Green Mountain Union High School, regardless of income.healthy eating clipart
Every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon, beginning the first week after school ends, the group will provide boxes of free perishable and non-perishable items for pick up or delivery. No one will be turned away.
The group is also asking that people with gardens plant an extra row this growing season and donate the produce to this effort. They are also seeking volunteers to help pack and or deliver items. If you have not already signed up and would like to do so, or if you would like to volunteer or make a donation, please contact Chris Meyer at 802-342-3139 or Phoenician@hotmail.com.

Birds and citizen science for homeschoolers

Homeschooled children ages 9 to 14 and their families are invited to gather at The Nature Museum at 186 Townshend Road, Grafton, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, for a program titled “Follow That Bird: Phenology, Citizen Science and Ornithology.” Nature Museum naturalist Lynn Morgan will lead participants on a bird walk, then help them to enter the data they have collected on a citizen science website.

Participants will learn about the field of phenology, the study of recurring plant and animal lifecycle stages. Participants are asked to dress for the outdoors, wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a lunch with a refillable water bottle.
Pre-register online at nature-museum.org or by phone 843-2111 by May 2. The program fee is $18 per child for Nature Museum members ($36 maximum per family) and $20 per child for non-members ($40 maximum per family). Parents attend with their children for free. Financial assistance is available.

In addition to quarterly homeschool programs, The Nature Museum offers a summer drop-in camp for pre-K through 5th graders on Thursdays. Homeschooling groups are welcome to contact the museum to schedule a personalized science and nature program for any age group.
