GMUHS senior wins Alger scholarship; 2 RVTC students earn welding certification

Thomas Foster awarded Horatio Alger scholarship

Thomas Foster of Chester, a Green Mountain High senior, is one of 556 students nationwide to be selected to receive the 2016 Horatio Alger State and Specialized Scholarship.

The average scholarship is worth $7,000. Thomas said he plans to use his scholarship to attend the University of Vermont to study neuroscience.

Since 1984, the Horatio Alger Association has administered one of the nation’s largest privately funded, need-based scholarship programs, having awarded more than $125 million.

In 2000, Horatio Alger members began funding scholarships concentrated in each state to further its mission of assisting deserving young people to pursue higher education. Additionally, association members fund a series of Specialized Scholarships, targeted to students based on specific degrees programs or academic institutions.

 Two RVTC students earn 3G welding certification

Two Industrial Trades students at the River Valley Technical Center have passed the American Welding Society Certification.  Zachary Tubbs and John Hildreth passed their AWS Certification in Welding 3G Structural Plate.

The 3G certifications mean that they are certified to weld groove joints and fillet joints on Structural Plate Carbon Steel up to 3/4-inch thick in flat, horizontal and vertical positions. The 1G means the student is certified to weld fillet welds and groove welds in the flat position on Structural Plate Carbon Steel up to 3/4-inch thick.

RVTC Industrial Trades students have been training for this certification for the past few months.  According to the American Welding Society website, the AWS offers a number of certification programs to assist industry in identifying qualified welding personnel and to provide opportunities for welding professionals to demonstrate their qualifications to the  industry.

Industrial Trades provides opportunities for students in three areas.  All students work with blueprints, learning how to sketch, read and build from them. RVTC is now enrolling students for the 2016-2017 school year.  The Industrial Trades program is a full year program offered for two hours per day to students in grades 10 through 12 from Bellows Falls Union, Black River,  Green Mountain Union, Fall Mountain Regional and Springfield high schools as well as private and home school students.
