GMUHS science teacher honored by middle school association

Green Mountain Union High School’s Brett Mastrangelo, a middle and high school science teacher now in his 2nd year, has won the Promising Practitioner Award from the New England League of Middle Schools.

This recognition honors excellent teachers beginning their teaching careers who are effective middle level educators who provide powerful learning for their adolescent students, according to NELMS.

Selection criteria include:

  • Enjoys teaching middle level students
  • Makes a positive difference in the school
  • Fosters community connections
  • Seeks professional development and implements innovative ideas
  • Meets the needs of individual students, using effective middle level practices such as:
    • Incorporating activity-based learning
    • Developing a sense of student ownership in their learning
    • Integrating higher order thinking

Mastrangelo was nominated by student Erin Otis, parent Kathleen Karl and fellow science teacher Allan Garvin. He will be formally recognized by NELMS during its annual conference on March 31 and April 1 in Providence, R.I.

Mastrangelo grew up in Millis, Mass., and studied science education at Keene State College. He continues to live in Keene, N.H., where he is pursuing his masters in science education.

Mastrangelo was student teaching in Walpole, N.H., when the position of 8th grade science teacher opened up at GMUHS. He is also pursuing his masters in education, also at Keene State. In an email, Mastrangelo said that, this spring, he hopes work with the GM track team “since I ran in both high school and college. I have also found a new hobby … in rock climbing since we have such a great rock climbing wall in our cafeteria. I hope to take on more of a coaching roll next fall.”
