LEGO Contest chair Lillian Willis, right, presents a check for $250 to Youth Librarian Karen Fisher.

The Whiting Library  has received a $250 donation from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church that came from proceeds from the church’s 2016 LEGO Contest.

This is the fifth year that the LEGO Contest has been able to give a donation to help purchase books for the Whiting Library’s children’s section.

For almost a month after the contest, the library displayed two of the winning entries: Lego City Hospital  by fifth-grader Joey Gomez and  Whelan Sugar House by fourth-grader Aislin Doran, both of Chester.

Family center raises $300 in rag rug raffle; winner is Weston resident

Rug Raffle Winner

Robin Lloyd of Weston with her new handmade rug.

Robin Lloyd of Weston is the winner of the handmade wool rag rug created by Edie Brown for a benefit raffle for Chester-Andover Family Center.

Through the gift by Edie Brown and those who bought raffle tickets, the center was able to raise $300. Lloyd was awarded the run in March.

Also, the center’s Election Day Bake Sale raised $520.  The center thanks all of the volunteers who provided the bake goods and also members of the community who purchased the items. The money raised through both  events will be used to support the center’s Food Shelf and Emergency Financial Assistance Program.

The Food Shelf welcomes food and/or cash donations. Suggestions for donations include: canned fruit in juice; hearty, meaty soups; canned meat; and peanut butter. Also needed: reduced-sodium, sugar-free and gluten-free products. The number of Food Shelf recipients increases weekly, increasing the need for donations. Please consider picking up additional food items when grocery shopping to donate to the Food Shelf.

EdgarMay kicks off free community walking program

Edgar May Rec center logoThe Wellness staff at the EdgarMay Health and Recreation Center has begun holding free community walks three days a week.

The STEP OUT community walking program, which began at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, April 18,  has no strings attached – you don’t have to be a member, you don’t have to pay and you don’t have to sign up. All you need to do is just show up and walk. Every Monday at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday at 5  p.m., and Friday at 7:30 a.m. — rain or shine — the group will meet in the front lobby of the EdgarMay and head out toward the bike path.

The goal is to walk for an hour, but the time and pace is ultimately completely up to you. Come meet your neighbors, make some new friends to talk as you walk, and get healthier with every step.

Walks continue through the summer into the fall. For more information, contact Dominic Lord at 802-885-2538 or by email at dlord@myreccenter.org.

2016 Cavendish Community Calendar

It’s time for Cavendish residents to think about which photograph you would like to submit for the 2017 calendar. Every year, the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association solicits Cavendish residents for photographs to grace its community calendar. The community then gets to pick the 12 best submissions for the calendar.

Photos must show scenes and landscapes in Cavendish and Proctorsville that are valuable for their beauty, historic significance and overall importance to the community. Pictures can include people or animals. The purpose of the calendar is to bring a greater appreciation and sense of pride about the town, which is the foundation of conservation and good stewardship. There are three age categories and the best picture in each category also receives an award and a prize.

If you have ever felt inclined to take a picture of a sight that you appreciate in Cavendish or Proctorsville, please consider submitting it for the 2017 calendar. You must submit an 8″ by 10″ photo in a horizontal layout, along with your name, a title for the photograph and the general location of where the photo was taken. Submissions of digital copies on a disk are encouraged.

Photos will be accepted from May 1 until May 31. Application forms will be available beginning May 1 at the Cavendish Town Office, at Cavendish Elementary School and at Crows Bakery on Depot Street, and they can be found now on our website at www.cavendishccca.org. Contact Robin at 802-226-7736 if you have questions.
