Junker Bailey holds workshop on drawing butterflies, history of 17th century naturalist

The South Londonderry Free Library, 15 Old School Road in South Londonderry, will host a workshop on drawing butterflies for all ages at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug.  14.

Join art teacher Casey Junker Bailey to learn about Maria Merian, the 17th century entomologist, naturalist, and scientific illustrator, aka “The Girl Who Drew Butterflies.” Her close observations of nature and detailed drawings in the 1600s changed the world’s understanding of science in an age when women were not expected to be artists or naturalists.

In this art workshop, which is free and open to grownups as well as children, we will make our own butterfly books and learn to observe and draw the natural world. The project is appropriate for all ages. Participants will also receive a free copy of the beautifully illustrated book The Girl Who Drew Butterflies.
