To the editor: Writer apologizes for removing campaign sign in Chester

I wish to apologize publicly for removing a “reelect Tom Charlton” sign from the park in front of the Chester Town Hall on Friday afternoon. I am specifically apologizing to the gentleman driving by in a white pickup truck who firmly stated that political signs were allowed on town property other than the Village Green. He was right, and I was wrong.
The town manager has confirmed that political signs are banned from the Village Green but are allowed on other town property.
I fully support the rights of all persons to free speech, assembly, petitioning the government for redress of grievances and the prohibition of the establishment of a state religion included in the first amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
In this time of threats to the very existence of our democracy, it is critically important that everyone of us be informed and actively promote candidates who support strengthening democracy and ensuring a just and more equal society for everyone.
