Windsor County elected officials.
First thank you for your dedication in representing Windsor County. It has been an interesting session. As the Head of School at the Expeditionary School at Black River, Ludlow. I still don’t have a clear understanding of how H.454 will impact ESBR.
Is school choice a thing of the past? I am hearing how the Burr & Burton, Lydonville, Saint Johnsbury Academy and perhaps Vermont Academy will be protected in this bill (senators and representatives) who have graduated from these schools. If this is true, then we have an elitist educational system.
Choice allows students who are alternative learners to attend schools of their choice that meet the uniqueness of their child socially and emotionally. Currently there are therapeutic residential and day schools that are greatly needed. A school like ESBR service students who do not have 504’s or IEPS, but they can attend. What about the student who is socially awkward or can only feel comfortable in a school with small class size. Who would meet these needs? At ESBR, we have enrolled students who have significant attendance problems due to bullying etc. The students attending ESBR are excelling.
Please consider the whole child.
Respectfully,
Mike Kell
