Chester Police Log for May 27 to Sept. 28, 2014

Editor’s Note: The Chester Telegraph Police Log is a sampling of incidents directly from Chester Police reports. We do not identify individual victims of crimes nor those who have been arrested.

Tuesday, May 27, 4:49 p.m.

A resident of downtown Chester reported that his apartment door had been forced open and a burglar had taken a laptop computer. He didn’t remember the brand of the laptop but would get that and the serial number from his girlfriend.

Wednesday, May 28, 11:51 a.m.

A Chester officer responding to an accident on Route 11 West found a cargo truck, which had been towing a multi-vehicle trailer, in the ditch. The operator explained that the second of two wide-load tractor trailers had been traveling in his lane and he could either run into the truck or into the ditch. There was minor damage and the truck and trailer were pulled out by a tow truck. The Vermont State Police stopped a wide load believed to be involved.

Thursday, July 24, 9:24 a.m.

Police told a local man to stop looking in the windows of Town Hall at employees and not to return to the building unless he had official business.

Friday, Aug. 1, 10:32 a.m.

A Chester resident reported that he had received a call from an  escort service saying that the service was working with police and that they were going to contact his wife. The complainant advised them to call the police, then. At that time the caller became angry and hung up.

Wednesday, Aug. 13, 6:28 p.m.

A Chester officer on traffic duty stopped a car traveling at 57 mph in the 40 mph zone on Route 103 South. The operator of the motor vehicle was under a lifetime suspension of his drivers license and was taken into custody and processed in Rockingham.

Saturday, Aug. 16, 5:20 p.m.

The owner of a local business reported that a young man had entered the premises repeatedly asking to use the phone, yelling, swearing and knocking tables around. The owner asked for a notice against trespass to be served on him as soon as possible.

Saturday, Aug. 23, 10:56 a.m.

An officer was dispatched to the Chester Depot, where a parked car was blocking the work that railroad personnel were doing. The officer attempted to contact the vehicle owner without success and authorized the workers to move the car with the help of a tow truck. The owner later contacted police to say he was “OK with it.”

Thursday, Aug. 28, 8:54 p.m.

A Route 103 resident called police to report that her chickens had been stolen. The officer reported that she sounded intoxicated and was not making sense. The officer told the complainant that she would need to give him a statement and she said she would come in the next morning. As of four weeks later, she had not filed a report.

Friday, Aug. 29, 6:14 p.m.

Chester officers assisted several tractor trailer trucks in backing up Trebo Road to the solar farm job site. The trucks had been having difficulty and were blocking heavy holiday weekend traffic on Route 103.

Friday, Aug. 29, 10:30 p.m.

An unknown person in a truck threw a “stink bomb” onto a property on Route 11 West. Chester Police took a report the following day but had no other information to go on.

Wednesday, Sept. 3, 11:40 a.m.

Police responding to a report of a motorcycle accident on Flamstead Road found that the driver could not remember what happened and kept repeating himself. He was taken to Springfield Hospital. Neighbors reported that the driver had been speeding and marks on the road indicated that he was losing control about 100 yards before the accident. The motorcycle had substantial damage.

Thursday, Sept. 4, 8:04 a.m.

Citing numerous incidents of skateboarding on town streets nearly causing accidents including one with a Chester fire truck, trespass, knocking on doors asking to use the phone, looking in windows of vehicles and homes resulting in six notices against trespass and ignoring many police warnings, a Chester man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. The man was processed at Rockingham and released with a court date.

Friday, Sept. 5, 8 p.m.

Complainant from North Chester advised that a family member was drunk and pushed her. She refused to give any statements and did not have visible bruises. She stated that she called police to show him that she was willing to do that. She stated that she would call if anything changed. The family member fled on foot into the woods prior to police arrival.

Friday, Sept. 5, 9:59 p.m.

A resident off of Route 103 North complained that she was not being treated well by her roommate. She mentioned that she cannot watch television because he always watches sports. Police advised the complainant that this was not a police issue and the pair needed to separate before it came one.

Saturday, Sept. 6, 5:06 p.m.

Police were dispatched to a home on Route 10, where the resident said that she and her boyfriend had ordered a $800 phone from AT&T, that it was apparently delivered, but put on the porch next to their neighbor’s door and is now missing. She stated that she wanted to report the situation to police but that AT&T said it will replace the phone at no charge.

Wednesday, Sept. 10, 8:07 a.m.

A caller stated that a vehicle was parked next to her pond on Dodge Road. A person got out, put something in the back and drove away. Police found the vehicle further up Dodge Road. The owner said that he had taken his daughter to school, then picked up her bike, which she left at the pond the day before, because she could not ride the bike up the hill.

Wednesday, Sept. 10, 11:25 a.m.

A Springfield homeowner called Springfield police on the radio to report that he had just caught someone breaking into his home and walking away with a box of belongings. He said the man had also been looking in the windows, gave the name of the person and described the vehicle that he was driving. Chester police began looking for the man when it was learned that he could be heading toward Chester. About one mile down Route 10, a Chester officer spotted the vehicle traveling west, and pulled it over. The officer told the driver, who had been asked to step out of the vehicle, that he was being detained until police could figure out what had happened. When Springfield officers arrived, the suspect said that box was on the car seat and that the homeowner was having sex with  “my wife,” that he went there to catch them and he did. He added that while he was on the porch, the UPS delivery driver handed him the box, so he took it. He then stated that he left and was chased in a high-speed pursuit. He was turned over to Springfield police.

Wednesday, Sept. 10, 12:36 p.m.

Police responded to a complaint of horses in the road along Route 103 North. Upon arrival, police found them out of the road and on the lawn. The home owner stated that someone else was storing the animals on his property and the owner would be there soon to take care of them. Police called dispatch and asked that they contact her to ask her to respond now.

Thursday, Sept. 11, 2 p.m.

Police received a call from Meals on Wheels requesting a welfare check for a resident on Trebo Road. The volunteer said that she went there to deliver food but that he does not answer the door and his truck is at the home. Police went to the door, and the resident answered it. He said he was in the basement fixing his furnace and that next time he will leave a note on the door.

Saturday, Sept. 13, 7:02 p.m.

Chester Police were called to a house on Main Street for the report of a woman who had fallen. Police assisted in packaging the patient and moving her to the ambulance where she was transported to Springfield Hospital Emergency Room.

Monday, Sept. 15, 2 p.m.

A woman called 911 concerned that she would be in trouble for entering a neighbor’s house to call her mother after her boyfriend had punched her in the face. When the Chester officer arrived at the house, the woman and her mother were there. The woman did not want to cooperate, but her mother convinced her to tell the officer what had happened. The officer arrested the boyfriend, charging him with domestic assault. The officer observed that the boyfriend was under the influence of alcohol, which was a violation of his probation. He was taken to the Southern State Correctional Facility where he was tested and found to have a blood alcohol level of .10. Bail was set at $5,000.

Saturday, Sept. 20, 10:54 a.m.

Someone reported finding an ATM card on the Automatic Teller Machine at the bank. Police located the owner at the Fall Festival on the Green and turned the card over to him.

Monday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m.

A business owner on Main Street East called to report that sometime after close of business the previous night someone had stolen two feather flags and their poles. These flags are about 15-feet tall and are valued at about $150 for the pair.

Monday, Sept. 22, 12:30 p.m.

A resident of Main Street West called to report that sometime after 10 p.m. the night before someone stole a large flower urn filled with blooming plants. The pot was one of the Chester Beautification Committee pots, and was thought to be valued at more than $100 with the plantings.

Tuesday, Sept. 23, 10 a.m.

A resident of Senior Circle called police to report missing medicines. She stated that the medicine had been sitting on the table unopened and in the pharmacy bag. There was no sign of forced entry.

Saturday, Sept. 27, 6:02 p.m.

A Springfield driver along Route 10 was involved in a car-bear accident. The driver was not injured, but the bear was killed and $400 in damage was done to the vehicle. The driver said he was driving at about 40 mph when the bear ran out of the woods. He said he didn’t have time to avoid the accident. The car was towed and the bear’s body was removed.

Sunday, Sept. 28, 5:52 p.m.

A resident along Route 103 South reported that a man had punched and broken her computer. Upon investigation, it was learned that the computer belonged to the man. Police told the woman that since it was his computer he could smash it if he wanted to. Police gave the man a courtesy ride to Bellows Falls for the night to defuse the argument.

    I love that I was ‘packaged.’ It sure felt that way. I thank the Chester police, the emergency crew, and the hospital staff both that night and surgery 10 days later. Doctors are great too!!!!
