Andover man victim of phone fraud, police seek public assistance

Vermont State Police report that an Andover man contacted them on Nov. 7 to say that he was the victim of a “financial phone scam.” The man saidFraud Alert road sign that he had been called by a Jamaican man who identified himself as Ceon McKenzie to say that he had won $10.5 million from the Publisher Clearinghouse Sweepstakes.  McKenzie told the victim that he needed to pay several fees – a Red Stamp fee, a Gold Certificate fee as well as IRS fees – before he could take ownership of his winnings.  The Andover man was given a cell phone number through which he could coordinate the payments. In total, he sent $1,250 through Western Union and had received nothing in return.  State Police are asking anyone who has been the victim of a similar scam to contact them. They remind the public to be cautious about sending money to individuals who promise large sums of money in return.
