Mrs. Hume grew up in Ridgewood, N.J., and attended Bucknell University. She married David Hume on June 26, 1954 (her 21st birthday) and together they went to Cambridge, Mass. While David attended Harvard Business School, they became parents to a daughter, Lauren, in May 1955. When David started his career with IBM in Endicott, N.Y., sons Bradford and David Jr. followed in April 1957 and May 1959 respectively. Dave Jr. was born on his father’s 31st birthday.

Mrs. Hume excelled as a mother and homemaker as well as involving herself in many community and church organizations. When her husband’s career took the family to Vienna, Austria, and Paris, France, Mrs. Hume rose to the challenge of moving the family and making homes in each of these countries.

In 1964, the family purchased a farm in Andover, Vt.. which served as a vacation home and home base for the family for many years. When Mr. Hume retired from IBM in 1978, the Humes became full-time residents of Andover. Mrs. Hume became involved in many community activities. She served on the Weston Playhouse Board of Directors for four years, was president of the VNA Board of Springfield and then on the combined New Hampshire and Vermont boards. She was president of the Green Mountain Festival Series Board and member for 15 years.

In July 2007 David and Barbara Hume moved to Wake Robin in Shelburne, where they were under the loving care of the Wake Robin staff until their deaths. Mrs. Hume was predeceased by her husband David Hume on June 29, 2015.

Mrs. Hume is survived by her children and their families: daughter Lauren Baker and husband Gary of Chester and their children, Jeff Baker of Denver, Colo., Doug Baker, his wife Tory and 2-year-old son Hudson of Centennial, Colo., Kenneth Baker and his wife, Casie Walton of Fayetteville, N.C., Derek Baker of Boston, Mass., and Sarah Baker of Chester; son Bradford Hume of Burlington; and son David Hume Jr. of Putney and his sons, Clayton Hume of Los Angeles, Calif., and Miles Hume of Portland, Oregon. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Stiles of Portland, Oregon, and numerous nieces, nephews and their children.

A Celebration of Life is planned for 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2016 at the Old Parish Church in Weston, Vt.
