Right for Vermont holds session on Prop 3 in Chester on Oct. 20

The Right for Vermont Foundation will hold a free public information session in Chester to help voters understand Proposal 3, the constitutional amendment on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the Fullerton Inn, 40 the Common.  The session will be open to the public and will include a question and answer period. To learn more about Right for Vermont’s view on Proposal 3, click here.

The session will be hosted by Clara Morrison, executive director of the foundation, and Alison Despathy, a member of the its advisory board. Proposal 3 would add a collective bargaining provision to Vermont’s Constitution.

Right for Vermont Foundation has raised several concerns about the proposal:

  • Workers are already protected. Federal law and existing Vermont statutes already guarantee the right to organize and bargain collectively.
  • It could raise costs for taxpayers. Collective bargaining for public employees, including teachers and state workers, directly affects school budgets and state spending at a time when Vermonters are already struggling with affordability.
  • It would lock in rules that future lawmakers cannot easily change. The amendment would bar any law that “interferes with, negates, or diminishes” the right to collectively bargain, which limits the Legislature’s ability to adjust policy as Vermont’s needs change.
  • It would permanently prohibit worker choice protections. Under Proposal 3, Vermont could never adopt a law preventing union membership or fees from being required as a condition of employment.

  1. Robert Nied says:

The Republicans are engaging in good old anti-worker, anti-union propaganda. The Trump administration is actively attaching workers’ rights. They have gutted the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) which have protected workers rights since it was formed by FDR in 1935. They have all but ignored the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 which serves to protect workers from dangerous workplaces. There has been a dramatic increase in workplace discriminations and retaliation against workers attempting to organize and collective bargain. Some of the largest Republican donors are corporate billionaires who have actively engaged in union bustling. The MAGA Republicans want to suppress workers rights, safety, benefits and wages to enrich themselves and worsen wealth inequality. VOTE YES on PROP 3, a critical step to enshrine workers rights in the Vermont constitution and to fight back against concerted efforts to take power away from American workers.
